HUGE DILEMMA

Hey guys,

I really dont know what to do. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. A month ago I bought a Yao Ming Ultimate Auto card which was graded GAI 9.5.

image

I decided to have it regraded by Beckett so I cracked the card open and sent it along with a few other cards. Today I received the card as evidence of being TRIMMED and there was also a dent on the card. (nor longer in 9.5 condition) Now as a customer, where do I stand? Beckett is telling me that this card has been tampered with but at the same time GAI graded the same card as GEM MINT 9.5.

image

Now if I plan on selling, it, I feel that its ethical to aware the person who is bidding on it, that the card was graded by Beckett as trimmed or should I leave that part out since GAI didnt believe the card was trimmed at all.

HELP?

    Hi Tv
You got one thing going in your favor - the card is serial numbered. I recommend you contact GAI and ask them how to handle this problem.
We have spoken by email - so please write me - would like to discuss this more later.
Sorry to hear about this - very disappointing.

I wouldn't take Beckett's word as the final answer as far as it being trimmed. I would trust GAI more than them. You could send it to PSA, but since it has a dent in it, you might not think it's worth it.

Is the card undersized? Beckett's deal is they'll grade *anything* that's the standard size, but they supposedly won't grade a card that's undersized. I got that straight from the horse's mouth. So maybe it was just cut short by the manufacturer? I've never bought a card from that set so I'm not sure how probable that is.

I think you could be screwed. Beckett won't take responsibility for damaging it, and GAI won't reslab it 9.5 now that it's damaged. And Beckett pointed out the tampering on the back right edge... check out the card to see what they are talking about and if there is validity to it, and if you think it'll pass (I have no idea what it's worth), but if it'll still grade 8 or better and has value at that range, might as well send it to PSA and see if they'll slab it.

When or how did the "dent" get in the card?

  • Please don't tell me people are trimming cards from 2002 !! Geez is there any end to the crooked ways people will try to make a buck.

I've never heard of BGS rejecting a trimmed card. I would have thought it would be the other way around -- GAI rejecting a card that Beckett had called 9.5. Interesting! Anyway, shoulda crossed it in the holder. Much better chance of GAI crossing to BGS then either one of them crossing to PSA.
  • WOW, this sucks! GAI 9.5 wasn't good enough?
  • I didnt really like the GAI Holder which is why I wanted it regrade by Beckett since I like there holders compare to the other grading companies. The card was dinged up most likely during shipping, Id assume. An email has been sent to both GAI and Beckett companies. I'd be anxious to wait for their reply.

I guess the reason why I cracked it open was because I rather submit the card RAW than having it regraded through the case. I thought the card had a good chance of getting a 10 and didnt want the grader to have already a bias opinion that it was in the 9.5 category.

There are guys on eBay making hundreds of thousands of dollars doing it. Just search for cards graded BGS 9.5, BGS 10, and GAI 9.5 and 10. You'll see the same seller's names over and over again.

teachervideo, whom did you buy the card from originally?

On a side note: Does anyone else think that the Beckett "checklist" that tells you WHY the card was deemed trimmed or altered including WHERE, is a really, really good idea?

It sure would be nice if PSA did that....

The last place to get a fair opinion about a BGS graded card is on the PSA boards! LOL It
seems like when it comes to cards getting the "trimmed" designation the card companies
are really just guessing...I can't tell you how many times people have submitted cards
just pulled from packs that have come back trimmed according to PSA. Maybe the card was cut short
by the printer and GAI missed it?

Anyways, you won't get subjective opinions here.

Actually, subjective is mostly what we get here. It's objective opinions that are hard to come by. image

My subjective opinion is that if I were in it for the money and had no scruples, I'd trim all my NM cards and sell them as BGS 9.5's, eating a very occasional "evidence trim" along the way and turning those into PRO 10's. Some people actually do that, and we could all name one or two.

My other subjective opinion is that the Reds were screwed in that abomination of a split season. (Sorry, but I'm still steamed about that)

  • The Reds' thorough screwing in the strike season is merely payback for their unnecessary thrashing of the Yankees in 1976.

  • Man, oh man, it seems like Im being slapped around the board. Anyways, I bought the card off from eBay by the seller of "coco_cards" Again, I in fact DID NOT like the way/desing of the GAI HOLDER which is the reason why I wanted it regraded by Beckett. Then again, people will ask me why I bought the card in the first place. Well, to answer that, "I bought it for the card itself, NOT the grade." At the same time, I wanted the card to be encapsulated in a good, sturdy case. Since I was graded GAI 9.5, I was pretty sure it would be graded by Beckett no less than a 9 which I wouldve been content with. By no means did I think the card that was bought was trimmed.
I guess the mistake that I made was cracking the card open and sending it RAW to beckett to grade. Before I shipped the card out, it was in MINT condition. I have a scan to prove that. But when I got it back yesterday, there was a ding on the bottom left corner which is visible with the naked eye on the scan.
Again, the reason why I cracked it OPEN was because I DID NOT LIKE THE GAI HOLDER.

Shipping and insurance was paid for to have Beckett send it
back to you right? Can't you collect from there? I don't collect
basketball, but I'm sure that card is worth a pretty penny.
    Oh well, good luck.
