Intercept Shield, are they worth the investment? Is the hype accurate?

Good question. I do store all my ANACS coins in Intercept Shield boxes. All I can say is that I haven't had any discolor, etc. I guess that's all you can really judge the product on.

I have some, but it is hard to form an opinion since nothing is happening to my coins that are not in IS.

To be frank, I am skeptical that they would help.

I've never even seen one in hand, but I'm looking at the advertisement and it looks pretty good.

The reason I'm looking is, when I came back from Iraq last time some of my coins took a turn for the worse image When I go back again, I need more protection.

    Anyone have any other recommendations?

I have one of their boxes, a really nice sturdy box. Can't tell you if it works or not.

It only costs slight more than similar non protective holders so there is little cost risk. We sell a lot of the stuff and most of the buyers come back for more regularly as they gradually protect their entire collection. I particularly like the various boxes and the 2X2 holders.

I'm not a big fan of albums with slides in them (such as IS and Dansco). While IS protects the coins from toning people still have to know what they're doing are they'll leave slide marks on their coins.

If you decide you want to try some, we sell it at 25% off list price which is hard to beat.

  • I have used an intercept shield album for my state quarter collection. The coins have been in the album for two years. The coins are all still perfect with no discoloration at all. The silver proofs have not changed in any way. In my opinion the album is really working. I agree with Wayne Herndon that the slides are problematic. I have exercised great care to not create the slide marks. Most importantly I plan on leaving the coins in the album and not moving the slides any more. I plan on buying another IS album for the rest of the state quarters.

I use both the 2x2s and the slab protectors for my copper. The are high quality products. Time will tell if they do anything. It has been 3 years and nothing has turned.

  • The only problem I had w/ the Intercept Shield albums is the rivits pulling out of the binding. I don't think they are as well constructed as the Dansco.

When I had my Registry Set in Lincolns, terror drove me to stock up on intercept shields from Herndon. I put everything I had of value in them.

My experience is that for stuff that had already started turning, copper and otherwise, the coloring seemed to continue (perhaps at a slower pace? Who knows?) For the rest of it, no new discoloring began (so far as I noticed).

It may be a bit like eating celery to keep the elephants away ("You don't see any elephants around here, do you?"). I've just been hoping that the placebo effect works on coins as well as people. At least I could sleep nights better.

Of course, getting rid of all those shiney red Lincolns helped my sleep even more! image

I've been using Intercept Shield since they first came out. So far, I'm very impressed with the results. No problem coins whatsoever. Of course, I live in SAN, where the humidity is quite low, and stable most of the time.image

    Hedger,

FYI, the new albums in production have another rivet holding the pages in.

  • Wayne, I've been curious about new production as several of their albums cut off a couple of years ago. When are new products expected? Maybe they are already out so I will check your site.

    TommyB,

They are not out yet but are expected anyday. We have a large pre-order in that is being shipped directly to us so we should be among the first to have them. If you sign up for our general mailing list on the website, we'll send you an email as soon as they are available. They were supposed to arrive before the end of the year so I'm expecting them any day now. I'll contact IS this week and see if I can get an update.

I have only used them for Silver Eagles and have noticed that sometimes they don't close very tight. Does this happen with other sizes or is it just because the Silver Eagles are large coins?

Has I.S. ever come out with a Type Set album yet? They have been saying that they will have one out for the past 2 years.

Given the fact that they have not been around for very long, it's hard to tell if there is any potential issue that will creep up years or decades down the line.

I have no reason to expect any problem. I just think prudence is the best bet if you are looking for a way to store rare coins.

I remember hearing somewhere that the manufacturers recommend replacing the boxes every 10 years.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Hedger -- A few of the albums were defective. There were issues with rivets popping, and plastic spine mounts that were not seated fully and pulling out of the spine. If you purchased the album from us, we'll be happy to replace it for you. Otherwise, whoever you bought it from should replace it if it contains one of the original defects.
