Can coins tone in lucite?

PhillyJoePhillyJoe Posts: 2,700 ✭✭✭✭
Anyone know the long term affects, if any, of having coins in lucite? Can they tone from exposure to sunlight, etc. or does the lucite freeze the condition of the coin forever. I have two examples I'll try to post to show some differences.

    Will acetone remove lucite? image

  • Since the toning of the coins requires sulfur and moisture and the lucite effectively seals the coin away from these, any further toning probably ceases. (Now the lucite itself may yelow for exposure to UV light.)

I don't know, I haven't tried. If it did I would first use a band saw or grinder to remove as much of the lucite as posible so as to use less acetone. I think using liquid nitrogen ould be more effective though. Again use the saw or grinder to remove most of the plastic then allow the great differences in the thermal expansions of the plastic and the metal to break the plastic and pop it off of the coin. Also at the extreme cold of the nitrogen the plastic should become very brittle and easily broken up and off the coin.
