do coins scan alright on a flatbed scanner?
I did a search through previous posts about taking pictures and I saw someone's ... coin interrogation lab..., but I'm not looking to spend that much money on a setup...

Scans usually don't capture luster and toning on a coin.

my coin ended up looking like garbage... guess i'll go the digital camera route under my dining room light fixture (5 60-watt bulbs)
I have tried a Canon scanner that uses LED's for a light source - gave horrible scans.
By older (and new Canon) use a fluorescent type tube that gives very reasonable results.
But I still get better results with a camera.
