scanning coins

do coins scan alright on a flatbed scanner?

I did a search through previous posts about taking pictures and I saw someone's ... coin interrogation lab..., but I'm not looking to spend that much money on a setup...

Scans usually don't capture luster and toning on a coin.

  • I use a flatbed scanner, in my opinion the images suck.

What about focus problems with coins in slabs? Some people seem to have this one nailed. I must not be doing something right.

I have no trouble scaning coins in slabs, but scanning KRUNCHERS is impossible.image

They do tend to get crushed...
  • My sig line was made with a scanner - the larger versions are petty good image Proof coins can be done, color can be captured to a good degree, silver etc..copper can be dark -but dont expect to get much luster on MS coins.

my coin ended up looking like garbage... guess i'll go the digital camera route under my dining room light fixture (5 60-watt bulbs)

The camera is the best route, but if you are looking to use a scanner, here is my experience:

I have tried a Canon scanner that uses LED's for a light source - gave horrible scans.
By older (and new Canon) use a fluorescent type tube that gives very reasonable results.

But I still get better results with a camera.
