Finally.... I completed my Washington Quarter set

Its been almost 6 years since the start and finally, I finished off my Washington Quarter silver set. I want to thank my good friend, Bob Zurick who I hope is feeling better and recovering well. Without his enthusiasm, passion, knowledge and honesty, my set would not be what it is today. He has truly been a great mentor and I wish him well.

I also want to thank all the others who have shared the passion for this great series. It has provided me countless hours of searching and looking for the "right" coins and talking with others, sharing stories, but most of all has fulfilled my expectations in what it has become and continues to be. It is a remarkable series that will only get better with time.

Now the search continues for upgrades.

  • Steve, A big congratulations goes out to you on FINALLY completing your set! Not only have you finished the set but you have entered the top 10! In doing so you have just about knocked me out of the top 20. image

Haven't communicated with you in a while but just the other day I was wondering when ol' Steve was going to find the last coin. Do believe you were searching for a 32d if my memory is correct. Care to share with us any info on your latest acquisition?

    Again, CONGRATULATIONS!image

Thanks everyone. It is certainly a relief when its complete. I think the coins in the collection are outstanding. It takes so long to find the "right" coins. Anyone with money can put together a high grade set. But to do it one coin at a time and study each and every date and to find that one coin that fits your collection is very satisfying in the end. Each and every coin has been sought out and I believe when the set is eventually viewed you could tell how much work has been put into it.

As for the last elusive coin. A lot of you know that I was searching for a PQ 1932-D MS64 with a chance for upgrade. Its in an old green holder. Not a cheap coin but any means, but I think I found the right one for me at FUN!! It is a very strong strike, with a few marks, but a very nice eye appealing coin. Very high end for the grade even if it doesnt upgrade. The auction had some action on it which makes me feel good about the piece and its place in the market. I think this was 'The One" I was looking for I finally pulled the trigger and said this was the one and wouldnt stop until it was mine.

There was only one other 32-D in 64 that I had ever placed a strong bid on and Doug Wright topped out on me and bought it for around $8500 a year and a half ago, I think. That was a superb coin and the one I got I think is even nicer.

In any event... to pedigree or not? Im not sure, but there about a dozen or so coins, including some early dates with mint marks that are candidates for upgrade. So I may just submit those and pass on the pedigree. To this date, I have never submitted a coin on my own, so it will be a learning experience as well.

Thanks again to everyone who has been wondering about me and when I was, if I was, ever going to finish. I could not actively be in the market with this one coin hanging over my head. I needed to conserve capital in order to build it up to pay for the most expensive coin I have ever purchased. Now that its done, I am sure upgrading will be considered, but of course with only the right coins.

    All the best

  • Steve,

Congratulations! All of us who have put together a nice mint-state set of Washngton quarters can relate to how much work (and fun!) is it. When I broke into the top 5 about 2 years ago, I went ahead and pedigreed my set. I think I can safely say that since that time, I have replaced all but a handful of those original coins, also upgrading both my '32-D and -S to MS65's. All those old slabs with my pedigree on them now belong to some other collectors! Of the 83 coins in the set set, I probably only have about 10-15 original pedigree coins left...all the others have been replaced/upgradede by now. Suffice to say, even when you are complete, chances are that you're probably not done! image

Have fun and enjoy the set. For me, there's no better personal satisfaction than going through all my coins and seeing what I have put together, as like yourslef, with the help of many kind, good friends. For me, all the good friends I've made through coins is the best part of this hobby, I think! Enjoy, and best of luck with your collection! image

Bully for you Steve!!! I've been slowly working on a Washington set too but still need 30 more coins.

Someday I hope to join you in finishing a set.
