Any opinions of Dr. Hoffnagle's dmpl morgans?

I didn't make it to FUN, so I didn't see the impressive collection of conditioanlly rare dmpl morgans put together by Dr. Hoffnagle. I'd love to hear anyone's impressions who saw these coins.

Based solely on the computer images and the cataloges, my impression is that many of the coins could not make grade by today's standards. The dates, mints and grades looked impressive on the slabs, but not sure whether the coins inside merited the grade or dmpl designation. As a result, I didn't place a single bid on any of the coins in his collection. The fact that nearly all of the holders were old, but a very few were new, made me think that Heritage also thought it was better to bring the coin to market as is, BUT the fact that a few were in newer holders made me think Heritage had gone through that analysis, which I felt was another reason to be spooked.

Thoughts as to the quality of that collection?

I brake for ear bars.

  • The images didn`t do the coins justice. I looked at the coins at lot viewing at F.U.N and they
were among some of the nicest black and white cameo DMPL`s I`ve ever seen.

Anyone else? Is there some understood rule here that such a question is taboo?

  • Heritage did their usual horrible job imaging these coins. I had a dealer (ex:grader) look at several. I thought I couldn't be outbid on the 83S--boy, I wasn't even close!! This one and a number of others were measured to have clear deep mirrors well exceeding the current PCGS requirements for DMPL. While a number of the NGC's might not have quite been up to standards, the majority of the PCGS Morgans were very high end according to the dealer I had represent me. A few coins had "problems" he felt were of concern, but not many.

I'll give Heritage a break on this one. Getting accurate images of DMPL coins is a dilemna in itself. You can manipulate the light angles to make a piece of trash look like it is super reflective and yet as noted here good coins can image bad. This is one of those areas where I guess you just have to be there in person or have someone you trust represent you on site. Even if only a few had problems, with the luck of most internet bidders those would be the ones that the internet bidders would likely end up getting awarded.
