Another question for you guys, and thank you for helping. I am really appreciate your help.

This is an uncirculated 1953 half dollar. Some disturbing toning on both sides though, and
the pictures are not that good either.
What grade will you give this coin?

The coin appears to be of MS63 to MS64 quality.

I think 65 is precluded by a weak strike (look at the poor eagle) however the bell lines look good.

On the low end, it's a relatively mark free coin, appears to have fair to medium luster,
I think MS62 would be too stingy, I doubt it would go lower than that.

Nice coin, lowest mintage of the series for business strikes!

Cant tell from the pic, AU58 to MS63?????????
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
  • Thats the weakest strike on a franklin I have seen yet.....

    I'll grade this one 62/63
This coins downside is strike and eye appeal. The upside is it's Relatively mark free(from these images). Bell lines are close though(PCGS) but I don't think it will make it. Not a chance at NGC.

I would actually like to have that coin.
  • I think my pictures are not doing the best for these coins. This coin is really nice, and must be graded high, but the strike is of course important.

As I have mentioned before, i am searching through about 4-10000 coins from an Norwegian/American estate kept in Norway since the sixties or seventies.

I could bring the coins to somewhere around Minneapolis or West Wisconsin, because the coins has to be sold this year. This is a heerloom of a local Wisconsin church, and the income will be given to the church.

    Edited for spelling changes

Markwise, a 65 -- strike will push it down. A quick dip would probably improve its look.

    a terribly weak strike..........

this one looks AU to my eyes...

what happened to the Pass and Stow letters on the bell?

    Lookie Frankies mushy mouth.....

No way this gets into a 5 holder...

    AU58.....

I have examined some of MadMartys AU58 coins, and those appeared nicer then what I see in these images....

  • Lucy, By any chance do you have a comparison coin that you can put on this thread? Now that you said that about the pass and stow I took a second look at it. Would the pass and stow be stronger than that even though the strike is terrible?

I can't even see it, this indicates rub to me.....

Since you asked, here is a Pass and Stow from a sharply struck coin that literally jumps off of the coin:

  • yep, Imma have to agree with ya on that one. But I still would like to have it LOL just because of the strike.

That coin you posted, that baby has to be a '48, '60 or '61..... that reverse is sweeeet. (the Coins reverse)

IMO the boldest/sharpest of strikes occured in 1951 at the Denver mint....
The coin pictured is a 51d that I bought raw, submitted it to PCGs and they gave me a MS65 FBL on it.....

In 1960 the master die was reworked for the Franklin series, bringing back many details that were lost as the 50's progressed, however, the re-work wasn't so great with the bell lines, making 1960 - 63 issues tough in FBL, particularly the Philly mints... a 61 or 62 Philly Frankie in GEM FBL is a very scarce coin......

when you see bell lines as bold as what the image I put up shows, know that Frankies from the 60's typically do not have bell lines that cut....

Sharp bell lines are rare..... I placed a incredible 62p in Fodudes registry set...... (or was it a 61p ?) This coin has some of the boldest lines I have ever seen in a 60's issue...... Yet they are not like what you see on this 51d.......

  • Thank you very much for the Info lucy.......it is always welcome!
  • I can post better pictures if you like.

This coin, HD 1953, is raw, and I am sure it will be high graded.
My problem is that I have thousands of coins to check and I am just checking a few on this forum.
