Went to our local coin show in Omaha today looking to make a trade for my 86-04 MS69 PCGS ASE set ..

.... I started the set for my son but his interests have kind of change so I thought about seeing if I could get a trade for 1999-2003 sliver and clad proof sets. I figured my ASE set and the proof sets work out to have the same value so a good trade, right? WRONG!

I went to "biggest" dealer at the show (it's about a 15 dealer show) who seemed to have the biggest display, and made my proposition. His response? "Well, first you ought to know that I think slabbing bullion is a waste of money and a waste of time. I don't care if they are all MS70's, all bullion is MS70. I couldn't sell it for what it cost to slab so the best i can do for you is $500. Now if you you want to buy some proof sets with that, it's up to you."

I looked at him and said, "Well since it's a waste of time don't waste mine and I won't waste yours" and walked away.

And every other table I got a similar offer, without the derogitory comments at least.

Am I that off base thinking that my ASE set is worth around $800? I thought it sounded like a fair trade considering the greysheet on 1999-2003 silver and clad proof sets is around $800 too.

It's kind of frustrating living in a small coin market.

  • I don't know what the value of your set is, but the dealers are going to want
to make a profit and they may not know the value, or make a market in these
    coins.

You may have better luck either dealing with someone that frequently handles
both these coins AND the sets you want, or sell these on ebay and use the
proceeds to purchase what you want.

You can't sell a slabbed SAE set at a show for what it is potentially worth. I saw a raw set today sell for $400. That's all any dealer is going to pay for it. You have to sell that stuff on your own at Ebay or on these boards.

  • They wont buy it for that price 800 or 900 but the sure as hell will sell it for that. Its one of the things that upsets me about dealers. First off they always have their own grading system based upon the 1 through 70 grading points but they grade it to their advantage. which mean not to the advantage of the customer. Good way to keep wining back business. so this talk about the dealers needing to make a profit is a cop out. They wont buy the silver slabbed as MS69 because they dont want to pay for MS69 coins but if they do buy them they will sure as hell sell them at a huge markup. The unfortunant sap that come in and then buys it then turns around a month later is lucky to get 40% of what they paid for it. Amazing thing is there is no difference in the coins or slabs.

AHhhh ok I need to stop or I will get the dealers who I call friends made at me so ill shut up.

Yeah, that's what I found out. But it was the snotty attitude that made his "offer" even worse.

I've been follwing eBay sales on sets similar to mine and they have been in the $800 range so i thought maybe i could get a trade and save the hassle of s/h. Oh well....
