Is it hard to find the first coin in such nice condition? I have only seen very circulated ones on ebay, and although it's only a half-naked guy on a half-horse, I'd like to find a better example to buy.

I might have a (raw) duplicate in unc of this 1910 drachma,because whenever I see a nice example at a reasonable price I buy it.However, you might be disappointed to learn, that it's a girl on the horse,not a guy ;-) ,in fact it's Thetis, awaiting Achilles to give him his weapons,a mythological theme with heavy connotations at the time for the newly reborn Greek state fighting to regain its territories, hence the choice of the design, the highest point of which, is Medusa's head on the center of the shield on the reverse. PM on its way.

See! All the ones I've looked at before were so worn you couldn't tell it was female! That, or the pictures were bad. Darkhorse does take some gorgeous pictures.

Thanks for all the nice comments, I too like this two year type design a lot. Here's the 1 drachma from 1911, much scarcer than the 1910, also in an ANACS MS63 holder,



they tone so nicely, don't they?


and the 2 drachmai 1911 (legend reads didrachmon), whose rarity in unc was very underrated until recently, slightly undergraded IMHO, MS61 by NGC,probably due to a very light scratch on the obverse.





These were the first modern Greek coins that were actually engraved by a Greek artist,almost a century after the coins of 1828-31, by sculptor G. Iakovidis.

My image of the 1911 was particularly small and I should've reshot it. The larger image isn't much more helpful I find.

As always I like the picture, but this particular coin is in fact much more colorful in hand, and most of the colour is on George's head that here looks white, a very difficult (and slabbed) coin to shoot. One of my best bargains too.
