Wood + Coins

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,041 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've heard that some, if not many, types of wood may have certain chemicals or properties that will adversly effect raw coins. Do any of you know which types of wood are the safest to use for coin storage?

Magikbilly posted several rants on this topic.

Ever see a Lexington that toned pretty in that original wooden box???? But the box is cool!

  • I believe that oak is one of the "bad" woods, and that some mahoganies can be potentially safer.

I also believe that our product presents no danger whatsoever, since it is an open-air design. image

What are you thinking of building?

I'm going to build myself a nice coin cabinet to house/display my collections. Nearly all of the coins will be slabbed and in racked pullouts. I'm not too worried about those coins. There will also be some "bookshelfish" areas on each side of the cabinet to house my Dansco albums and these are the coins I'm concerned about. I was a finish carpenter by profession long long ago and now just work as a hobby. In my original plans I was intending on using Tiger Maple, haven't made up my mind though.
  • Tiger Maple would make a gorgeous cabinet, but I'm not sure how it compares
to other woods from a safety standpoint. Perhaps you could line the areas
for the Danscos with some inert material?

Ha! You read my mind man. I was thinking of using mylar sheets to line the two areas for the Dansco's. Which brought up the question, would epoxy used to secure the mylar sheets damage the coins? lol It's never ending!

I have no idea about this, but you're right about it being never-ending. Avoiding
chemicals in general would be prudent, though.

Maybe it would be overkill, but you could have some plate aluminum or steel
welded into a box, that would then be built into your cabinet. That should be
    very safe.
