Need help 1878 8 TF VAM Attribution; nice coin!

I bought this 8 TF today along with another. Both have some very interesting characteristics.

Given the descriptions and photos in both the VAM book and the Top 100 book, I think this is a VAM 11 but I really just can not be certain. The reverse has three added feathers right wing and two added left wing; the appropriate doubling for the A1f reverse.

I haven't got any 8 TF VAMs so if someone could look through all of these pictures and give me advice? Also, the coin is prooflike and appears mint state to me any opinions on grade would be appreciated.

I know there are lots of photos but the 8 TF have quite a few diagnostic points. Note the olive branch, wreath, legend, ribbon and stars on the reverse are all doubled.

I will put up the second 8 TF on Sunday.

I was checking all the photos and checking my books. The reverse of this coin is A1f which means this coin can be one of the following: 11, 12, 16 or 17. VAMs 16 & 17 have LIBERTY doubled left. I couldn't really tell from the picture but it shold be fairly easiy to recognize. So, if you could confirm or deny this feature, then we can proceed after narrowing it down to two possibilities.

  • Jeff, Liberty is not doubled. 4th star right is intact.

Snoozing on the couch sounds like a good idea, who spends Saturday night looking throuhg a microscope anyhow?

Further study has me convinced this is an 11. If so, I guess I should send it in to get slabbed it is in nice shape.

  • I just dug out some of my 8TF coins and the first 8 in the date matches my v17. Notice the chips and scratch insode the lower loop of the 8 So, that's the coin you have.

Edited to add: are you sure LIBERTY is not doubled left?

  • There is doubling in B and E, not the entire LIBERTY. I see what you are saying abou the date, though. I think it is probably a 17 darn it.

I could make an argument for the I26 obverse as well. May have to send this one to ANACS. Got another interesting coin to put up tomorrow.

    Thanks

  • Chips and scratch in the lower loop of the first 8 match yours. . .

You should see doubling of LIBERTY to the left. . .

  • Definitely a Vam-17. A reward was offered years ago for someone to produce a Vam-11 and out of all the current Vam collectors at the time there was not a single specimen verified. It is believed at this time that the Vam-11 doesn't exist and was a misattribution when it was originally described.
  • Now that you mention it, someone did tell me that before. I guess I should make a note of that in my book so I'll remember next time. I pick up 8TF every now and again when I find a bargin but it's not a frequent purchase.

    Thanks for the reminder!

  • Thanks everyone of well I wouldn't have sold it anyhow if it were VAM 11.

Anyone have an opinion as to the grade?
