The Charles II Sixpence Collection

I've yet to update my page dedicated to this set on the coinpeople forum.

But i'll stick a version of it here simply for those interested, plus i always like to get people interested in sixpences. image

They were minted from 1674-1684 inclusive, with overdates in several of those years, some dates are only known as overdates.

A full set consists of; 1674, 1675/4, 1675, 1676/5, 1676/5 (with a large 6 over a small 6), 1677, 1678/7, 1679, 1680, 1681, 1682/1, 1682, 1683 and 1684.

They key dates are 1680 and 1682 non-overdate variant.

I have;

1674

1675

1675/4

1676/5 large 6/small 6

1680 (the key date) A cheap filler piece.

and 1683

Of those 1674 is my fave and the 1676/5 is my least fave (the best grading and semi-key) but i don't like the tone much.

  • Well my aim is to acquire all the dates first. Hopefully from now on most of the dates will look like the 1683 one or the 1674 one. Once i have them all, i'll then start upgrading the 1680, replacing the 1675/4 and the 1676/5 so that the set looks more uniform in appearance.

I love the way the 1674 and 1675 (non overdate) actually compliment each other, i think the 1683 works well with those two also.

Edit to my original post at the top, the large6/small 6 phenomenon actually occurs on the 1675 issue, not the 1676.

I have a full William and Mary Set also.

If i can get the full Charles set, then i can move onto James II and get all those. Hopefully then i'll have Charles II, James II and William and Mary completed 1674-1694.

Then it's George II's turn, which'll make a full date run through 1728-1758, plus both Geo III early milled variants. If i still have enough steam after that lot then i'll turn my attention to Anne and Geo I. Leaving William III till last.

I always have a plan! image

I just like to know where i'm going, of course i don't always stick to this plan. The weirdest thing about this is that over the last three years i've been constantly moving the objectives in this series, should i do a 1674-84 set, a 1674-94 set? A Geo II set... no matter what i do, it all amounts to the same thing, a full date run (including overdates) 1674-1787, which is hopefully what i'll end up with one day.

The one big obstacle is William III, the coins of that reign are a nightmare, i like the design of that issue but in the small period of 1695-1701, what could happen in 6 years? Well a massive recoinage, three obverses, three reverses and a fair few provincial mints. I could quarter the work load by focusing just on the London mint and omitting errors, which is what i've always intended to do, but it's still gonna be tough.
