Weird Jefferson - What caused it?

Can anyone suggest how this Jefferson came to be?

Would PCGS slab it as an error? ANACS?

It is normal size. It is pretty messed up, huh?
  • I think it might be water damage.

    Struck in thread or debris?

It looks like one of two things to me:

    1) It was frozen and then heated, numerous times.

    or

    2) It was pressed, or hammered, or flattened to some degree, then hammered back into round.

I think the second is most likely, because when I was younger, I found a nickel that had been run over by an empty box car, and I hammered it back into round with similar results.

It looks like it was struck through a dust bunny on both faces. Seriously, it does look like a strike through error incorporating some coarse material on the reverse and thread-like objects on both faces. However, without a close inspection under a microscope, one can't exclude some kind of environmental damage.

It does look like it was the end of an ingot and had too much contaminant and slag in it.

It would sound "hollow" if dropped if this is true.

  • Did you find it in a parking lot? Looks like it was run over a few times.

Whoa....that's weird. Looks like problems in the coil process or improper alloy mix.

Definitely not damage alone, no way. Those who say it's damage either cannot see it clearly or don't know what they're looking at. It is struck through in part, but also has planchet problems, re the cracks. It's not one error, it's a combination of interesting errors....but it's definitely NOT post-mint damage.

  • Asolutely mint damage-scope would probably reveal metal fatigue and ,I suspect die shatter at strike impact, in effect, causing struck thru appearance .Note D in God.IMHO

  • Thanks for the replies. It sure is interesting. Do you think I should send it to ANACS and see what they say?
