Canadian ship token

Here's a Canadian "Ships, Colonies & Commerce" colonial token. There are quite a few varieties of this token and I was hoping that a forum member could help me ID it.

There's no date, but I believe that they're circa 1830-40 ish. The H (designers initial) in the waves on this one is incuse.

According to my 1963 Charlton, there are 50 varieties of that type of token. It is listed as BR-997. You have the British flag one, there is also a rarer one with the US flag.

One of our Metal Detecting Forum members dug one back in September... a pretty nice early one, too! (Nice for a dug example, anyway).

I understand the earlier ones showed an American flag on the ship instead of the Union Jack. (?)

Edit- ah, I see Don already posted that. I think the one that Bunker dug had an American flag.

    Ok, I'll give it try.

Prince Edward Island, Ships Colonies & Commerce, Double H mintmark (the 1st H is at the right end in the double lines below the waves, the 2nd H is punched above and slightly to the left of the 1st). The double H series was produced by Heaton & Sons of Birmingham after acquiring the dies from Thomas Halliday. These tokens are not dated but believed to be c1836.

Yours is the "club knob" & with a thick sharp tail and the C of Colonies over the C of Commerce making the variety PE10-36.

    Condition is VF-EF and valued @ $40 to $80C.

Thanks Gene. I see what you mean about the double H...the top H is punch in (incuse), the lower one, that only the top half can be seen, is raised.

  • Excellent, Gene! I couldn't decide which variety it was myself.
