How does the rough cut affect this card's grade?

What are your opinions on the right border of this card? I think it's a great looking card, but I wonder what effect the rough cut edge would have on the grade.

Would this pull a 6? 7? 8?

I'd guess a 7. I don't think a rough edge in and of itself affects a grade, but a rough cut sometimes either dulls one or both corners of the rough edge or results in an extra tuft of corner fuzz. This Mantle looks like it has some extra fuzz on the upper right thanks to the cut, but I too think it's an attractive card.

No chance for a PSA 8. No higher than a 7. A probable 6 or lower.
  • I've found PSA to overlook rough cuts. However I agree with yawie99 in that the rough cuts sometimes soften the corners. The top right looks fuzzy. Maybe it's the scan, but the bottom left looks a tiny bit layered. I also can't tell if it's the scan or the card, but are there white print bubbles to the right of Mick's head?

    What's the gloss like?

Gorgeous card, worth submitting anyway for a 6 or 7.

Very clean, clear gloss. Otherwise good card. Just that edge that has me concerned.

  • I've got a lot of 61s with rough cuts. I have a Clemente with a more pronounced rough cut, softer corners, and 35-65 centering that came back with a 6. Submitting it will only set you back 12 bucks with the Registry Special, and that's a valuable card, even in a 6.

    Good luck!

That's a beautiful card - no speckles in the black background that I can see; rough cut for '61 is standard but I think the lower left corner brings this card to a 6. If not, it'll grade higher because the visual appeal is great on your card. I also agree that a slabbed 6 Mantle card will be more valuable than leaving it raw. Plus, if you are reselling it, it'd be one of the nicest 6s around.image

I have yet to hear from this board anything about trying to smooth or sand a rough cut card. I am curious. I have used the panty hose trick on wax stains before, but I am curious about rough cuts. Would PSA consider it altered? Can it be done well?

I understand that PSA likes the rough cuts on issues prone to such; they offer evidence of authenticity. I wouldn't want to alter an appropriate rough cut, anymore than I would consider altering any part of a card. Removing wax stains with pantyhose is the same as brushing off dust, in my mind. If it comes off without leaving a trace, that's not an alteration. Just my opinion.

I had a 75 Yount PSA 9 with a rough cut on one side and it sold for sick money on Ebay. I thought it would hurt the price but instead it almost doubled it's normal price.
  • yawie99 seems correct, unless it affects a corner, it won't matter one way or another more than .25 of a grade, max.

Rough cuts do not effect the grade of the card. In fact, Joe Orlando stated at last years National that he likes to see rough cut cards (for the reasons given above). I currently own a PSA 10 rough cut card. At first I hated it, but after hearing Joe's comments about "rough cuts" I have grow to enjoy the card.

I too appreciate a bit of a rough cut on vintage issues. It gives it character, demonstrates the crude technology of the time, and shows it hasn't been razored, or lasered, or whatever the card surgeons do nowadays.

With 1970s OPC, it's very difficult to find a card that's NOT rough cut. I think they used worn, dull cutting wire to slice up their sheets. So it's not unusual to see PSA 8 or even 9 on a card with a lot of roughage, if they determine the edges are not worn. I guess they have ways to tell "untouched" rough from "worn rough."

As for that Mantle, I think it's mostly that bit of excess paper on the upper right that is the downgrade. I would not advocate snipping it off, however, even if PSA might not catch it on that tiny area, because it constitutes trimming. That Mick was born that way, so we must show it some love!
  • In addtion to what I said below, I also admit I do like the look of a rough cut.
Sometimes one can make it look very vintage and unworn. Jeremy

If the rough edge is the only issue and the rest of the corners are nrmt-mt then it is definetely at a minimum a PSA 7, but would also have a very good shot at a PSA 8. I've seen rougher edges than that in 8 holders

So did you win the auction? I assume that's the raw '61 mantle that was just on ebay. It certainly looks like it.

With just the rough cut, I think it's a 7, maybe an 8, but the bottom left corner looks like it might be a little soft.

No dice. You are correct, but I did not win. Looks like it went for a nice price. ~$390.
  • They'll keep coming up. Raw #300s are a dime a dozen, if you're patient. I got mine for $150 and PSA gave it a 7.
