opinions needed..

I am thinking of putting this in my ebay descriptions. I have never ended a auction early before, I have just started trading on line and it seems like a good way to shift inventory, (ie. acquire new, replace old)

"Bid Early, This piece is also on my trade list, I am an active on-line trader, If I receive a fair offer and there are no bids I will end this auction early"

A) is it illegial?
B) Would you bid?
c) would you bid from me in the future?
d) Can it hurt my repution on ebay?

  • I'm not sure if Ebay allows this, but I wouldn't bid on your auctions. It really doesn't give everyone a chance. You could use the buy it now feature,or give Naxcom a try.
  • You can end an auction whenever you want. eBay doesn't care.

I have even seen some sellers write stuff like...
"even if you are the high bidder, the cosignor may stil decide not to sell it to you if their expectations aren't met etc..."

If you are an occassional seller, it probably won't hurt... but if you intend to be a regular seller people may get annoyed with you ending auctions early. I say put a one price sale on it. If no one hits it they lose... if it goes up for auctoin, let it run its course.

If you canceled my bid to end the auction... then I wouldn't bid on your auction again... you'd go in the "weenie" file.

If you ened it before I bid, I'd probably learn to bid early on your auctions in the future.

I think you'd see a hit from people not bidding, thinking that you are going to just pull auctions and say it got 'traded' if it wasn't doing good business.

I think you should use seperate inventories for trading and for selling.
  • some good food for thought thus far, please keep them coming. I would never cancel any bids, If I even did it I would only end an auction if there were NO bids., It is tough to maintain separate inventories. In my opinion EBAY is soft right now, for most raw (ungraded) stuff. I do like the opinions so far though. Thanks.

I would never bid on an auction like that. If the seller mentioned anything to the effect that the item may not be available, even if I am winning bidder, forget it. I'd be pretty upset, especially considering I would have spent time checking up on the seller, and paid for a snipe bid also.

I see those type comments a lot in scam auctions, and to me, it sounds scandalous.

I wouldn't use that language. Aside from the scammers who invite offline offers (they don't have to worry about PayPal chargebacks or eBay booting them if it's an off-eBay deal), people use such language to avoid selling if the bid is too low for their taste. They say something like the "consignor" pulled back the item. There is no consignor. It's a 19-year-old kid pretending to be a big consignment dealer.
