Who's gettin da "free ride" on ebay?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
COULDN'T be the major auction houses who get their stuff on consignment, take a slice of the price, charge the buyer some more and save about a jillion bucks on catalogs. All for adding a couple bucks ONCE per coin for puttin it on ebay for MORE exposure as an EXTRA service to consignors.

Naaaah, that ain't why the fees are goin up. It's GOTTA be because server storage space is getting SOOOO expensive. Specially for the little guys with 4 coins to sell who don't use a moving, interactive, zoom in-zoom out, 20 minute voiceover musical picture loading program.

Yep. Gotta be.

  • Are you f'in kidding me? Storage space........used to be $100/meg now you can get a 200 gig for $300

I bought a server last year on a dot com that went outta business....it's a Ziotec 1 terrahertz with a 4 proc HP server 1gig ram for $3,500.00

I ought to go over to Bascom avenue (4 blocks from my house) and drop the server off at Ebay park after seeing the price hike in my email today.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • Nope, the ones getting the free rides at EBay are the executives who are richer millionaires today because of us and will possibly become billionaires after the February price increases. When asked, "which would you prefer to be - a millionair or billionair?", one executive passed gas and said, "Geef me ALL you money!"

What a crock - so stop using eBay already, and then they won't be "getting rich" off of you.

Make a "stand" and go shill your junk on yahoo's auctions, etc.

Heck, come up with your own auction site and software. Become one of the bigwigs who "sticks it to the little people."

Or, just keep on complaining that a revolutionary service that works to the advantange of many doesn't just give you the use of said successful service for less and less and less until it's FREE because "that would be a nice thing to do."

    originalisbest.....

I don't think anyone here is against ebay making money. What it appears is that they KNOW they are the only game in town and are becoming increasingly greedy. They already get a cut if you use paypal (not on my free account) and get a nice chunk with all of their ebay fees. There is no where else to go worthwhile, and until there is, ebay and paypal can both put the screws to us little people.

That is why I always try to sell anything I've got here on the b/s/t board first for what I think is a very fair price.

    yeh....topstuf wuz bein sarcastic.

But...IF...they had to keep all of it in filing cabinets in rental storage sheds it wud be spensive.

And I am resigned to fee increases by everyone forever. ebay is the big dog and always will be.

(I started a coin network once. Superior to anything out there. Powered by UBB and also had a combined selling program for a buck a coin (or lot).....also free unlimited listings to "member/dealers" who would pay $9.95 per month with bullion quotes and wotnot. F-L-O-P. I even had pawnbrokers callin me an askin if ..WE.. did all the uploads and descriptions.....sheeeeee)

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you used UBB, it was likely not superior to anything out there.

Ah yes, the "politics of envy"....

Hey, how about getting the government involved. We can institute "auction fee control" !

    Don't laugh.

The new fee increases are needed to pay highly trained experts who will monitor and shut down fraudulent coin auctions.

Nah - it's just for more profit for Meg

Don't count on that, they probably get a piece of it from the seller.

You note that Topstuf didn't say when he did it. If it was years ago it quite possibly WAS superior. Remember their was an "On-line" bfore the web and there were virtual auction sites before eBay.

dthigpen..... Now you would be right, but at the time UBB was the best available. Actually, it wasn't but my partner (who was a very good tech) tweaked it and we had sorta redone the whole thing. The UBB was for messages only (cleared weekly) and he also built an interactive database for members where an entire inventory COULD be listed.
We were a bit early with it. Most coin dealers at the time were on CoinNet and it had not yet gone on Internet.
Coin dealers are not the most tech-savvy folks in the world and I include myself in that and it's why I had a tech fer a partner.
It was very very good and the ONE dealer who did use it found it dead simple to use.
    (damning with faint praise....er sumpin)
Anyhow, since I .....finally......got the message that my kids did NOT want a FREE coin/pawn shop (along with a trading network and other stuff), I stopped paying for the development and just retired instead.
There IS selling software out there that is simple and convenient and very very good now.

But....for me..... OUT is just fine.

(Retirement is hell......it's just never..... done.........well until "that" day anyhow....heh heh)
