I do occassional computer fixes on the side....got to talking to a good friends ex mother in law who needed a printer fix and email setup for outlook express......So i go and fix the computer and so she goes to write a check and pay me while i look and admire her antiques and this one particular spoon set she has on display, not yet cleaned....great color.

I remark how beautiful the colors of the spoons are, uncleaned and such....and mention I love coins like that.....she tells me she has a ton of coins from her dead husband and "I should just give you a handful instead of writing a check". "Sure" pops out of my mouth in a second or two......next thing I know I am looking at bags of silver circulated coins.....tied together and noted to the contents with an envelope inside....we dont break them open, she just shows me bag after bag. Then the big one....she goes on to tell me of proof sets that her and hubby took out of the little plastic bags and put them in other bags to save space, "we threw out the little cardboard boxes".....and yep, there it was a bag of proof coins from the early 50's and 60's...all banging together....i nearly cried (nothing newer than 64). She had piles of Littleton Coin stuff like gold replica's and junk from other promo's.......leather coin holders just stuffed with nasty green coins stuck together in a pile......"is there good stuff in here i wondered??"

I didnt get to inspect anything closely, just through the cloudy bags as she handed them to me one after another or dangled them infront of me. She noted she was going to bring them to the mall coin shop and sell them bit by bit......I now have arranged first crack at the stuff and I am so psyched.

My time was short this evening, but my gift for fixing her computer was the following item........American Historic Society Coin set....the last 20 years of nickels in a beautiful PVC holder.

Are impaired proof coins worthy of acquiring? I know I can buy them, she wants to sell, but whats the price?????? The mall coin shop will hammer this lady, but will I be buying un-sellable stuff of coins that wont gain value????

your thoughts?

Yep, and nicer lady. I hope her and her hubby didnt spend too much on Littleton crap....she did say she inherited some of the other stuff.

The buffalo's are 1919 through 1938, mostly P, except 1925-s, 1931-S, 1935-D, and 37-d, 38-D Not a bad set, it needs acetone bad as they have greenish tinges to them...may be to far gone, but its history and I love the set for the 1 hour of chat with the lady....ten minutes of computer work and we both enjoyed the chat and coins more than anything.

  • Yeah Littleton crap is way toooooo pricey! Nice find on the nickels. As far as the proof coins go, how bad are the beat up?

Great story! I wouldn't give up hope on that proof stuff yet. If he just chucked them in a bag and it sat there for a few decades (instead of being sloshed around from spot to spot every few months), they might not be too god awful beat up although they're most certainly going to be beat up some. Just have to have a look see.

I am interested in this bank, a Santa bank, which has coins stuffed in it and overflowing......there was a nickles sticking out of it and it was a 1964, near gem, just toned cruddy from dust and such....must be full of silver, it weighs a ton.

The proof stuff was a bag she waved in front of me and I didnt hold......the bag was so nasty, but i could tell they were proofs......stuffed full and tied tight, so maybe not too much jungling around.

    I will keep informed.

  • Personally, I would tell the lady that they guy at mall will her hammer her badly, especially on the beat up and green coins, and offer to sell everything for her for commission - but that it will be quite time consuming and may take some time to sort the good, the bad and the fugly. I would also tell her that some of the green coins are barely worth selling - unless prime date, etc. She needs to know the truth before she gets her hopes up. Kewl buff set - hope you can rescue the greenies.

  • I have a story very similar to this. Stay tuned.....I'll be telling this story this week end and I'll have a bunch of pictures.
