Craig, you've been collecting those blue roosies for some time now. Have you put together a complete blue set yet? By the way, nice toners!image

    Top one is PCGS MS65
    Middle is PCGS MS66
Bottom is raw but I'd hazard a guess of MS66 if sent in

I wonder why the Roosies tone only blue like that with no intermediate gold or other colors--composition, storage??

Morgannut2, interesting question and one I've givin some thought to.....

many of these blue Rosy's have come out of albums - library of coins, Raymond, Whitman etc....but I've noticed that in Whitman albums, there are some coins that commonly tone the same.....for instance, the 47S which is the right most coin in the top row in a whitman album commonly tones blue while other coins around it don't. Perhaps its something to do with it relative position in the album, being in the upper right hand corner. Very common on other coins like the 56P and 58P whereas blue toning is VERY uncommon on D mint coins (go figure) as a whole.

As a blue Rosy collectors, I have, for instance, complete blue toned 1956 to 1964 "P" mint coins and only one D mint coin (59D) - I cannot find D mint coins with blue toning. It is a scientific toning mystery........ image

Why is D mint blue toning uncommon?
  • Options
That kind of narrows it down to the compostion or the way the planchet was treated at the Denver Mint vs. others
