Has NGC gotten as stupidly tight as PCGS, or is R&I just very, very, very good at imaging?

your #2 postulation, I think Russ. Cameras can do wonders.image

I just got a 1965 back from NGC that didn't make the cameo designation - and it was cracked out of a PCGS cameo holder.

  • Maybe they are tightening their belts with all the SAHTV ms70 SAE's that they graded and are selling, along with the PR 70's... that looks to be a awesome Kennedy- and I was going to send in 3 full sets of sms coins to NGC- gee I don't know if this will be a good move....

Looks like a pretty good image, and a pretty conservative grade. The picture was shot in very bright diffuse light (likely natural), with the coin itself in a shadow. The holder looks pretty washed out. Still, the coin looks like it has decent mirrors and some contrast, which on a 65 is usually a cam designation. The reverse is nicer, which is unusual.

My guess its the photo, as we know if it was close to cameo they would have * it most likely.

I think NGC is stupid tight now. I was very peeved last week with grades. One example was a crackout 10 digit Green PCI 1884cc Morgan graded MS63PL. NGC called it MS62. An Absurd grade on a Morgan with screaming luster and eye appeal. I'm done with NGC for a while. image
  • Yes to your first question. I dont know about R and I's imaging. image

It'll be interesting to see what it looks like in hand. I figured it was worth a shot for the BIN of $15.

Damn! I need to check Lincolns too. If I'd have seen that one, I'd also have snagged it.

  • Maybe he has a photoshop program that lets him set the coin for no cam cam and dcam? I'm willing to bet the coin does not look as nice in person.

I have bought many coins from Rick over the years.

They do take excellent pictures, but, I don't think they do anything extra to enhance them.

If you can't trust the photo from them, you can trust their description. Rick is as good on cam and dcam that is in the business.

I think if the BIN had been a little lower, I'd have also grabbed it.

    This one came in today:

I think it's a baseline cameo. But, I also think it grades MS64. It has some pretty severe hairlining beginning in the field below the bust and extending up and over the neck.

Mine came in today also, It has nice contrast on the obverse but the reverse is not as good. I don't think it would get cameo today. I would be glad to buy this coin all day for the price. I think their pictures are representitive of the actual coin.
