Why do Ike's sell for so low on Ebay???

Been looking to pick up an Eisenhower Dollar for my collection. Been searching Ebay for PCGS-cert only dollars.

I've notices a ton of 1976-S and 1973-S clads selling very cheap...sometimes $20-30.

Here's a 76-S clad type 2 selling for $25. It's PR69DCAM

Ebay Link

I'm actually looking at a 1973-S Clad PR69DCAM that is only about $15 so far with not that much time left. I don't get it. According to the PCGS price guide, these are $175-200 coins.

Am I missing something?

I don't want to buy anything until i know to scoop on why Ikes don't sell much. Is it simply because the demand isn't high?

I don't plan on purchasing to resell, just to collect.

  • I started in on the series in an album (started cracking my first coins from slabs - since they're worth $15 to $20). I think they're kinda cool. And that's coming from someone who collects SLQ's. Proofs of these years are relatively easy to find in 69DCAM. Not like it's a 58 Proof Franklin. And of course the simple supply and demand.

  • I like the coin for it's large size and weight. I have a few circulated Ikes, but looking for something that would actually hold some value.

I guess demand isn't much seeing as i can wait out for some of the more "valuable" coins in the series.

It would be nice however if 20-30 years from now the coin does actually gain in value.

image Alot of your questions about Ike's can be found on the Registry Forum. You can do a search using IKE and you'll get alot of hit's. Good Luck!!! Lee

  • I've recently picked up a few Eisenhower's off of Ebay in the $30.00 - $40.00 range for the earlier years.

    1972-S MS67

    1973-S MS67

    1974-S MS67

I feel the same way, I think the size of the coin is unique. And if they do go up in value in later years great- If not, no big deal.

Once in a while I'll search and try to pick one up and in time I'll get all eight years. It's just kind of a sideline, I'm really into early gold.

Two years ago those IKE's used to bring good money. I think one of the problems is PCGS has loosened up on their grading of Deep Cameos so the coins are all over the place.

Mustang5L5, I'd guess the PR69DCAM 1973-S Ike you're looking at is the Clad version yet it is the silver one that is the key date and worth the extra premium and price you quoted. With that speculation though, you're right, bargains in the Ike series are plentiful on eBay.

I just picked these two lots up this week:
Small lot of PCGS Silver MS Ikes

    Better Date in PCGS MS65

Price seems cheap for a PCGS MS65 Clad Ike

  • Well, i tend to prefer silver coins, but for some reason i've been noticing that for some series the clads rank right up there with silver coins and sometimes even value higher. I know that it is only a guide and doesn't reflect true market value, but it's just a trend i noticed.

You were correct however, the coin i have my eye on is a 73-s clad proof peice, but in all honesty, i'd rather collect a silver coin. I think i did see a silver 73-s for about the same price.

If you were to only collect 1 Ike proof, which would it be??? A 76-s type 2 DCAM?
