My most recent and most expensive coin I have is a 5 dollar ($5) 1908 Indian head piece.
I looked it up in one of the most recent Coins or Coinage Mar. 2005 magazines and was amazed to find it worth $275.00 in AU-55 condition!
I paid $215 when I purchased it (awhile ago) . But there's one more thing ! The coin is graded and encapsuled by ANACS with no problems at AU-58, slighly higher than AU-55 (The grade I purchased it for).
Just a tad under uncirculated. Could someone please explain what makes these coins so popular and rare? My answer for this is its indian (Taditional american symbol; besides the eagle) symbol, as well as it not being made much. How many years were the 5 dollar gold piece indians made total? About 16? I didn't see many. which is good, low population that is

The $5 Indian was made from 1908 - 1929. Its a very popular coin because of its styling. The $10 Indian is also sought after for it's beauty.
Edited to add: And, as we all know... price guides are simply that, guides, and are quite often incorrect... so... you may sell that, and only realize $235 dollars... yes, more than you paid for it, but a good bit less than your price guide said... on the otherhand, you might turn and sell it for $350! Who knows... but, I find the prices realize on auctions is a much better indication of current value than price guides...

<< <i>Honestyly, I think most of it's value comes from the gold content... if you go a few grades down, then it pretty much loses it's numismatic premium, and is just worth the amount of gold in it... I don't think Indian $5s are really popular... now $20 Indians and Saints... those are really popular, and, especially in Gem UNC grades, command a good premium over spot... >>
Gem UNC? I bet..damn i'd like one of those
