Question regarding Hockey Cards

Was there ever a hockey card produced in the early 1990's called Smokies Hockey Cards? A friend of mine says that he has two unopened cases of these. He states that they were produced by a company out in Vegas which went under after two years.

Does anyone have any info on these or does this sounds totally bogus?

There is a smokeyscards in Las Vegas. I was there about 12 years ago. They used to be a big advertiser in the Sports collectors digest. found this listing on the internet. Not sure if the numbers still good. as far as producing hockeys cards im not sure.

Smokey's Sportscards branched out from being a large dealer in the early '90s to making his own minor league hockey sets. He followed that up by going into the forged autograph business.

The cards are not worth much.

  • Nick is correct. I think they may have made the ultimate original 6 hockey set of 100 cards featuring older players and possibly a draft day set as well . None of the product is worth much
  • yes, they were trying to scoop the rookie card market by producing cards of a bunch of juniors. Nice finish, but not worth anything now

  • Smokeys did a draft picks set for the 1991/92 season. The set was pretty lame, consisting of players in generic uniforms doing posed shots on the ice. They are not bogus, as the players were paid for their appearances, but they are virtually worthless. Nice to have if you are looking for a particular player's card, but not much else.
  • Definitely handy for those of us who are "completist" collectors; I collect any/all Chris Osgood cards, and he had two in that set (one had 5 different goalies on it). Chris called that set "bootleg cards", but I never asked him why?

    Some added info:
Smokies; They produced the 1991 Ultimate Draft sets.
Product said Ultimate Hockey on the boxes or on the case.
PSA & Beckett list them as Ultimate Draft as well as the Pop Report.
These came in set form or in cases of 16 boxes per case.
I know because I have this junk. To me, the cards are
fairly cool looking with up and coming stars. Pretty much
all the rookies that came out in 1991 are in this product.
Forsberg, Markus Naslund (pre-rookie), Osgood, S. Niedermayer,
Glen Murray, etc. This set depicts the players
wearing the Smokies logo/advertisment on the front of the jerseys.
I'll post pics later when I get home if anyone cares. I like them. The
cards also came in form of regular U.S. or French version as well.
    Cheap junk, but cool stuff.
