These two large cents are from the same collection as the half. The 1856 shows alot of traces of red, the 1832 has no traces of red , but real original color. Attached below Please give your opinions.

  • I'm gonna say AU-53 on the 1832 and AU-58 on the 1856.
The 1856 may be MS but I think I see a little wear on Liberty's
cheek. If there's no wear it looks MS-63.

    Both are super coins!!!

Both look like very nice high-end AU pieces to me.

BTW, to insert pictures in a thread, all you have to do is copy the URL (web address) of each image and put opening and closing tags before and after the URL, as I show in black in the example below. (The red area is where your actual URL goes).

    I hope the 1856 will MS60 because I paid MS63 greysheet ($190) for it.

MS60 is a hard target to hit. Your 1856 should either fall just short or exceed that mark. When I think MS60, I think bagmarks and hairlines, and your coin doesn't look that scuffy to me. It'd either go 58 or 62-63, in my opinion.

Edit to add a PS- I had an 1853 half cent with a similar look to that '56 cent of yours. It did go MS60 BN when I submitted it, which surprised me. I considered it AU55 to AU58. (It was graded by SEGS, though).

I really like that 1832. Funny how one of the dumpiest representations of Lady Liberty has become one of my favorites- I love those Coronet/Matron Head cents.

Maybe it's because I dug one with my detector.

My buddy found a nicer one.

The 1856 just graded at PCGS as MS64RB.image it has lots of red. Slab# is 21880447
The 1832 just bodybagged, "Damaged" at PCGS.....I will find the reason it bagged once I have the coin in hand. BB# is 21880446

Hi Paul, if you want to find a home for that 1832 I might be a buyer.. would be an upgrade for me

Is pcgs specific in their "damage" or is it up to you to guess?

I would've guessed PCGS MS-64 BN on the 1856- you might have ghotten lucky with the RB designation unless the picture isn't showing something. On the 1832, it looks like what NGC calls MS-62 all day long, probably AU-58 at PCGS. I'd have to say the BB happened because of some small amount of stuff on the surface ("environmental damage?"). Do a real careful check for PVC residue by tilting the coin at various angles under a good lamp. 1832 is one of the toughest middle dates to find in nice AU, although it is frequently overlooked by copper variety specialists because there aren't any rare varieties for the year. I wouldn't part with it too quickly if you're collecting by date.

The 1832 may have been bagged but it is still a very desirable coin and if it is affordable I would also be a possible customer for it.

jdimmick....Thanks, I think it is a beautiful coin.

Rhedden.....This coin has lots of red. My photo makes it look brown. I would love to see this in a MS NGC holder.image I will closely inspect this coin for any PVC. Is there a safe way to remove PVC from copper?

Baley and Conder101.....If I decide to sell it I will let you two know.image A bodybagged coin does not mean I have given up on trying to have this coin slabbed. My picture sucks....this coin is gorgeous chocolate brown.

If the 1832 has PVC on it (green or white haze stuck to the high points), then soak it in acetone overnight. A very careful washing with isopropyl alcohol may also do the trick, but acetone is usually preferred. In really bad cases, gentle wiping with a cotton swap dipped in alcohol or acetone will remove heavier PVC deposits.

The other thing to do is to look at the deeper brown areas with a high powered loupe. If it is slightly porous or rough, then PCGS may not want to grade it, and there is no way to save it. The dark brown areas may be places where the coin was already damaged by PVC or other contaminants and someone else cleaned it off before selling it to you.

Rhedden...Cool .....acetone won't hurt the copper. What about MS red copper. I have a clad layer missing statehood quarter that needs PVC removed. Would it be safe to soak that in acetone also or will it affect the color?
  • rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭✭✭
Acetone won't do anything to the metal. Just makes sure it is pure acetone, not some mixture containing acetone and other ingredients / cleaning agents.

Very Coolimage I have some pure acetone. I will try to remove the PVC myself.
I really didn't want the hassle of dealing and waiting on NCS.
