OT, Traveling and Taking Metal Detector?

I'm considering a vacation soon and wanting to take my metal detector. Doe's anyone know if there are any regulations regarding taking a metal detector on a flight or cruise? and are there any certain rules about detecting and finds in other countries ?

I'm sure there must be lots of rules. I would suggest asking the guys on the Metal Detecting Forum here. Some of them will probably be familiar with transporting the thing, and with rules, too. They will need to know what country or countries, too.

Be very careful about metal detecting in other countries. Many of them have very strict laws about removing antiquities. I have been to some countries where it's illegal to export old coins, even if you purchased them from a dealer.

Ask on the MD forum. I'm probably the biggest poster there, but since I have never flown (or sailed) with my detectors, I couldn't tell ya.

I'll be interested to see what answers you get, since I have often wondered the same things. If I ever go on a cruise with the wife, I am gonna wanna take the detector along. It goes where I go.

    Yes,

if you go to Greece with an MD, you won't get past the airport and if you do, it will be for a night in jail. No joke.

edit: you don't want to know what happens if you get caught with "finds".

Good advice, Dimitri. I'm glad I checked into that before I decided whether to bring my detector to Rhodes last summer. That's what I had in mind when I wrote my previous post. image

May be better off renting one and asking the rental service about the rules.
  • I was thinking about Cancun or Jamaica? If it seem's like to much of a problem, maybe South Padre or near Tampa or St. Pete?
  • It has been YEARS since I was in Jamaica and back then metel detectors weren't a problem. If you are going to St Pete best time to go out is right after a good storm/gale. Lots of bright and shiney's come up then and if you don't want to carry yours you can always rent them there.

Have fun even though you may have to beat the other MD's away with a stick.image

Just don't make yourself an appealing target to muggers while you're in Jamaica (or anywhere else, for that matter, but especially in places like Jamaica, if what I hear is true).
