VAM help-what the heck is this 1878 1 TF?

I used to think I knew a little about 1878 P 7/8 TF. I bought this slabbed Morgan last week at a coin show. I swear to goodness, it looks like a TF remnant under TF 3. Also, significant die clash under the bottom lip. I sure can't attribute it. Is there any such things as a 7/1 TF reverse?

It is a PCGS MS 63, by the way.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Rick

It definitely has the B1 reverse and over polished nostril. I don't see any doubling on the legs or feet. Are the leaves on the olive branch disconnected? If so, it's not a 7/8TF but it could be something else interesting.

The leaves are all connected and it has the long nock. No doubling on the feet or legs. There is a distinct additional tail feather below feather #3. Strange indeed.

That over polished nostril reminds me of the VAM 84, which isn't a 7/8 TF coin. The 'L' in 'LIBERTY' will be weak and there should be a dash underneath the first 8 of 1878. I'm not sure what would be causing the doubling on the tail feather. I'll have to take mine out and have a look-see!

Edited to add: The clash would indicate it is a VAM 84 too. You may have one with the ever-so-faint clashed E!

Do that, I thought of 84 myself and the L is weak indeed. This extra TF bothers me, I will be interested in what you find on your coin.

Is the r in 'TRUST' broken on the reverse? If so, it's vam-188.

No the R is fully intact

    Rick,

I checked mine and they do have this slight doubling on the tail feather but your coin is the VAM 84. I'm not sure if this is significant enough to mention to Leroy Van Allen. You could mention it to him and see what he thinks.
