Alabama Commems - relatively pricey?

Greetings, All -

According to the data from a current Heritage auction, here are how many Alabama commemoratives are certified MS64 and higher:

PCGS 64 - 751 with 423 higher
NGC 64 - 648 with 258 higher

Judging by these numbers, I would assume that there are hundreds of MS65 examples out there, yet an MS65 costs over $1000. Does this seem too expensive relative to other commemoratives? What's the story with them... are they more rare than the pop reports would indicate?

There are approx 400 regular Alabama + 400 Alabama 2X2 pcgs graded 65 or better, so about 800 65 or better total. Net mintage for both types combined is approx 65,000. Lots of them circulated duning the Great Depression. If you compare the ALA. with the 1926 Sesqui., there are approx 180 65 or better (25% fewer than the ALA) and they sell for around 3500 in 65, so 1000 seems about right to me------------------BigE

  • Thanks for the information, BigE! I guess that makes sense that the coins circulated during the depression, rendering them rare in gem. I don't own one, but I think it's a beautiful coin.

just make sure if you buy an ms65 that it is not fugly toned like most are

and conversely you do not get one of those dipped blast white ones yuk...........

and make sure the reverse is fully struck and specifically not weak on the eagles breast
