Questions about Cameo Proof Franklin Set and Cameo Kennedy Silver Short Set.

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,104 ✭✭✭✭✭
As I have posted before I, like others, am a fan of cameo proof and SMS coins from 1950-1970.

I am curious about whether any Cameo Franklin Sets or Cameo Kennedy Silver Short Sets (slabbed or raw) have been sold in the market place as a complete set or sets. I have a vague recollection of R&I Coins trying to sell a Cam/Dcam Frankie set some years ago.

Has anyone been invloved in any such sale or do you know of any such sale. If so, what are the details (when sold, where sold, how sold, raw or slabbed, cam or dcam, grades of the individual coins and the sales price). Thanks in advance. SanctionII.

  • Sanction,

As a fan of the Cameo Frankies, and yet still a newb,i have no knowledge of prior sales.

I can tell ya a set of PR67 or 68 CAM Frankies from 50-63 would be quite easy to do !

If,you have a big enough check book !

To do it yourself from raw coins would still take a hefty check book and tons of time !

100Proof1957,you are right about the time it takes to assemble a raw cam/dcam Frankie set. I have been working on mine for about 5-6 years. As far as the cost, finding raw cam/dcam examples of earlier dates in the series, 1950-1955, is expensive but not obscenely so. The laters years, 1956-1963 is not that expensive and raw cam/dcam examples can be found, sometimes very cheap.

The big pain in the arse, is again, finding the darn raw cam/dcam coins.

As far as slabbed coins, I see them and pass on them since I do not want to pay the high prices for same.

Ah, the 1962 Frankie in cam/dcam.....................contrary to many statements about the difficulty of finding this coin today, my experience has been that they still can be found in original mint packaged proof sets without much difficulty.

When found they are cheap (i.e. $10.00 for the set containing the one pictured by Russ), even though the half alone would be worth multiples of the price of the set. Gotta love cherry picking and gotta love cam/dcam Frankies and Kennedies.

BTW, nice pick up Russ. Are you going to submit it for grading? What do you think it's grade is?

    No, and 67CAM.

  • My bud in Arizona is building a registry Birth Year Proof set for 1958.
oddly enough,i was looking at prices and the Linky and Jeff are much easier than 1957 in say 67 or 68 Cam
but the last 3 are much tougher aka More Bucks !

On a side note, just got back from the local dealer, selling some of those paper glueing things to raise some cash, looked at the bid board and saw a Raw 70 Kennedy i felt was a lock 68 CAM,maybe 69 CAM or a 68 DCAM,little weak on the reverse however, what do you guys think i should bid on it ?

I've been collecting cameos for about 15 years now. Lots of changes in that time.

I have rarely seen slabbed cameo Franklins sold as a set - maybe once or twice. I also remember the R&I set, but as I recall this was a set that was owned by one of his clients that wanted out. So R&I attempted to sell as a set, but was also willing to split it up. I don't know what ultimately happened there. You might try looking at the newsletters posted on their site.

I have also seen a few sets that were put together in a Capital Plastics holder. Very nice looking but prices were sky high.

I would suspect that nearly all of the top cameo Franklin sets were put together one-at-a-time over a long period of time. Some dates are very difficult to find in gem cameo or dcam. For as long as I've been collecting I have never had a 50 or a 52 dcam Franklin in hand. I was able to find and purchase all the other dates, but it took 10+ years.

Cameonut, you have been collecting cameos about 9 years longer than me. I bet you have some interesting stories and observations about "the hunt".

As for me, during the 6 years I have looked for raw cameo frankies, I have found some really nice ones. However, the 1950, 1952, 1955, 1959 and 1961 in strong cam/dcam have eluded me. The 1951, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1963 I have found all have a similar look (strong mirrors with heavy even frost) and look great next to each other. One day I will find similar looking coins for the other years and then have a set that knocks my socks off. I have no idea how long it will take me however.

    TTT.

Thought I would refresh this thread and seek additional replies from fellow forumites on CAM Proof Franklin sets and CAM Kennedy Silver Short Sets.

So far, some forumites replied with posts about CAM/DCAM proof Frankie sets. However no one has yet replied about CAM/DCAM Kennedy Silver Short sets. I know many forumites have assembled Silver Short Sets. Your comments would be appreciated. SantionII.
