1973 Topps Candy Lid Proof

I have collected a few of these from Topps and think they are pretty cool - the Lids are a challenge but can be obtained in 9 quality. This is the actual proof card and unlike the 1 7/8" diameter of the released card, the proof measures the standard size card. Topps released this "test issue" on a very limited basis in the eastern US. The issued oval card is actually the lid for a small tub of bubble gum kernels.

    Mike,
Great items, I love these things. I'm actually working on the 73 lid set right now. I will say though, that finding them in 9 quality is not very easy, in fact, there has only been 1 graded a 9. Most lids are in the 5-6 range because the tab had to be bent to remove it from the candy container.

Abe - how much does PSA take off for edge chipping on this set (front and/or back)?
I have a couple I'm thinking about submitting during a future special.

    Hi Mike,

I have a Rod Carew 1973 Topps Candy Lid Proof for trade... let me know if you would like a scan and if you have any Hank Aaron or Willie Mays items.

    thank you,

    Nick,
As you can see from the example that Mike scanned, you can get away with some chipping on the back and still get a very nice grade. On the front it's much tougher from my experience. Now, with that being said, according to the pop report, only 20 of these have ever been graded so I think it's a bit of a shot in the dark right now. If the creasing on the tab isn't very bad you might have a shot at a high grade.

So my question is...where are the ones coming from that don't have the crease on the tab and got a 9 or 10? "Backdoor" discount or present? Since some of the issues were limited to the eastern area only - my guess is that some lids slipped out the door.
    What do you think?

The more I see the proofs the more I like them!

    Mike,
That's exactly what I think. I believe that the ones we are seeing that are high grade were never actually used with the candy container, they just made it out somehow.

  • hey mike,

the 1970 lid is 1 of only 2 bench`s graded by psa. the 1973 lid is the highest graded bench lid to date. (only a handful have been graded)

no, their not proofs. but then again, psa does not grade proofs.

but i still think the proofs are the whip !! wish i had a bench one.

    Hi Nick
No on the crease; if they have a crease - implying that they were used, they are grading more like 4.

    Hi Lee
I'm thinking a Bench proof went up this year but went a bit high for me. I try to keep these in the 100$ or less range - the Mays, that just closed was more like 200$ - the Ryan also went for some righteous bucks!

Cool cards for the Bench guys - who was it who has the Bench lid in a 9? Was it Marty?

How do you get a candy lid without a crease? I thought they were all mechanically creased when they were used to cap the small tub of candy they were distributed with. I have several 1972 proofs that are not creased because they were never cut, but I didn't think you could get a regular issue (not proof form) lid without a crease... from what I am reading, it seems I am mistaken... if someone can elaborate on this, I would be interested. I also have a 1973 Mickey Lolich proof, if anyone is interested in trading (PM me). It is the only one I have ever seen of Lolich.

No one seems to have any concrete evidence on how unused lids wound up in circulation. Perhaps, when they were distributed to the candy stores, the salesman had samples? Slipped out the door with employees - after all back then these things would be considered as valuable as a 7 cent stamp?

murcerfan, does McRae have a website?

A crease in the tab does indeed usually get a PSA 4 although this copy is quite a bit off center as well.the only Yaz graded by PSA.

Nice Yaz and I will take it with, without the crease - centering doesn't matter. My all time favorite so far is my Reggie lid proof.
