The Bay of E and 2nd chances...

Is it just me or is there an upsurge of 2nd chance offers from sellers on the Bay?

In the past two days I've been offered (and took up) two different medals, one of which I was the third bidder on. There's no way in either case that the sellers had duplicates. Not only that but there have been 4 others I've taken up in the past three weeks.

Maybe people bidding and then realizing they don't have the money to pay for it after all? Just curious to hear if anyone else has had this experience lately...

  • It's happened to me a few times in the past, but not lately, although I haven't bid on much lately.

Be very very careful with Second chance offers. I had a friend get one and he got taken for $800.00. Some sent him an email that looked like a legitimate second chance offer. The guy asked for western union wire transfer. Only a day later my friend realized that the guy he sent the money to was not the same eBay ID as that of the original seller.

I highly doubt he'll ever see his money again.

I have gotten two second chance offer on large ticket items(1500+) in the last three weeks and sent them both to Spoof@ebay after verifing under seperate correspondence that the seller did not send it. Both were proven phoney. Watch out for those seconds, they can be sloppyimage

  • I have taken up a second chance offer but only from a seller I know and trust from previous business. Also the second chance offers I have given out to bidders when I have multiples of the same item have all been taken up. I would be very dubious for a high price item though, especially after reading horror stories. The danger is that you are all fired up after just losing the item and you think you are getting it for your bid rather than the (higher) finishing price.

Good points on the potential for fraud.

In both cases the 2nd chances were from dealers I've worked with in the past and the payments went to verified Paypal accounts that matched the previous ones used by these sellers. (Like others I track my purchases... image ) Both the purchases have shown up in my eBay summary linked to the correct sellers. Since neither purchase is terribly high, less than $120 in total, I'm not too worried about fraud in these cases. If they turn out to be frauds the issue is more the ability of someone to hack the Bay to that extent! image

I have had good success with them, mostly through sellers I work with a good deal, but sometimes not. Since I'm only bidding what I'm willing to pay, I usually take them up. From my conversations with the sellers I know, there's a steady problem with non-responsive buyers or non-paying ones.

Be aware, though, that if the seller believes the bidding didn't go high enough the first time around, then they'll relist it instead, so being offered a 2nd chance usually means you've bid in the ballpark ... or too high. image
