So, is this 1952 Mantle real??

It's been said that there hasn't been a genuine raw '52 Mantle on ebay for a long time.

What's the verdict on this one?

  • I would say yes...it was thought that irishhosta was the alter ego of brian and Mike Wentz (BMW Cards). Of course, the Irishhosta location is now in Florida but it used to be in Madison, WI, just like them.

Edited to add: I don't think it's them. I believe the card is legit, just not in great shape.

Judging from the flurry of bid activity on this card, it would seem not too many folks believed in the authenticity.

I think that was due to the high price for the grade rather than authenticity problems.
  • I just am not sure about the back of the card. The front appears the be real, but the red on the back looks too bright.

Is it real? Not sure on the Mantle; the back looks kind of interesting and buying raw for that kind of money is a real crap shoot...but... Are they real?

  • If it is BMW, I wouldnt question the authenticity. I have purchased from them in the past. Is the reason for a non-graded Mantle rookie the hole on the right border? Doesn't that make it ungradeable, only authenticatable (how's that for a nice word!?).

Except ... wasn't it BMW who said he had dealings with a professional restorer? Not that this card could be improved much by doctoring.

I do wonder why it's not graded. Even PSA 1 or 2 would have got more bids and more money.
