I dont know why they keep nickle and diming us to death? From my understanding they are making a killing and the stock is doing great. I think this will lead to another site gaining market share . And I hope that happens to ebay.

I don't use them, but they are doubling the fee for ten day auctions as well.

  • Once these other sites get the traffic of Ebay what is going to keep them from raising fees the same. I like it when there are fee increases the more sellers who leave the less competition there becomes.

It is funny everytime there is a fee increase it is the "end of Ebay." This change really don't affect me at all all my non auction items are on Naxcom or Cardshark(magic cards)

  • has anyone ever sold on yahoo?
My ebay store IS CLOSED TEMPORARILY
  • Yahoo is a joke.. I have tried there and never sold a thing, have bought 4 or 5 items and paid for them and never recieved anything.

  • Overstock and bidville are the most likely competition, but until these sites do something to attract buyers it is going to be hard to see them competing with Ebay. Right now Bidville's problem is the free listing fees it encourages sellers to list tons of junk that will never sell. Their search does not make filtering through this junk any easier.

I am going to list a few items at overstock or bidville. Just to do it. Better then sitting around waiting for it to happen.

Did you read through all the new fees? They are lowering some as well. Personally I never use Buy It Now (useless - disappears after the first bid anyway) or 10-day auctions, so it won't affect me at all. I would think the 10-day hike is more ploy to discourage sellers from using it than to make more money.
  • It seems to me they are trying to encourage sellers to lower their prices on most items. Many sellers would put items in their stores that never sell for book price or above and they would just sit there. This new fee makes these sellers think more about sellnig cheaper. Remember low price selling is what keeps the buyers on Ebay and without them there would be no Ebay.

  • Final value fee is also going up!

    Old Price:
5.25% of the initial $25, plus 2.75% of the next $25.01 - $1000, plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance ($1,000.01 - closing value).

New Price effective Feb. 18, 2005:
8% of the initial $25, plus 5% of the next $25.01 - $1000, plus 3% of the remaining closing value balance ($1,000.01 - closing value).

Wow! Some sellers will now raise their high shipping fees even higher.

Its getting out of hand 8% of final value is to much. ebay is going to lose sellers this way. now buy it now fees are way up if it gets hit. i very well could be done with them right after topps heritage run this year. lucky that it releases before feb 18th.
  • Snowball, where are you getting your information? I read this at the link from above:

<< <i>Insertion and Final Value Fees
The insertion and Final Value Fees will be changing for items listed in certain Business & Industrial categories. More details about the changes for these categories are provided below. The insertion and Final Value Fees in other categories will not be changing. >>

Edit: I see now where you are reading that. It will affect eBay Stores only. Regular auction listings will not be affected.

ohh good then. forget my last post!
  • 8%? The bloodsuckers! Virtual monopolies are no fun...unless you are the monopoly. Boy, we really need a viable alternative to eBay. It's going to happen someday. It would be nice to see eBay have to FIGHT for buyers and sellers.

I know Yahoo has mostly junk when it comes to sportscards, but their name recognition, hit count, portal functionality, etc., I would think would put them in a position to really give eBay a challenge. It almost seems to me they don't take their auction biz very seriously. Some smart internet company is going to eventually find eBay's weak spots and take away marketshare....This eBay domination can't last.

    Just my 2cents.

Increasing final value fees for stores kinda makes sense. They are taking up a lot of system space and don't turn over as quickly as auctions. However, there are now three certainties in life - death, taxes and Ebay fee increases! Regards.

They should raise the fees, it's a free market, economics, blahblahablahablah. Oh wait, please. stop. arrggggh "Iseeyou" took possession of my keyboard....lol

Yes raise fees on ebay, but do away with paypal fees. Afterall, they are making both, and certainly not fooling me. HEH

I think it can and will..there is no viable alternative to eBay. Any company hoping to take a huge market share from them will have to have very deep pockets.

Then there's the matter of copyright..a new site will have to come up with an auction site that does not infringe on eBay's copyrights.

And of course, IF a site does show promise, eBay will just buy them out.

    IMHO only.

I foresee lower merchandise prices and higher shipping prices at the eBay stores. Plus people looking for increasingly creative ways to sell offline and use eBay listings as cheap advertising.
  • EBAY Prices go up, all this means is sellers will start raising the prices for shipping. It really is a shame, that a company has to continue to get greedy, just like cable companies. The problem is the huge lock that e*** has on the auction world, there is no competition at all. Bidville? come on that's a joke, type in psa (255) items. That's a joke.

Its a shame, but I*** has a fully monopoly on the online auction world, in my view they have one of the biggest monopoly in the world for any product.

  • Well if Wagglepop keeps all the promises they are making it will be nice.. The owner is a sportscard collector and has expressed his feelings toward counterfeit cards and reprints being sold as the real thing.

I am waiting on his response on graded cards. I am pushing him to set it up so only cards graded by PSA, SGC, GAI and Beckett be allowed.

Snowball and the rest are correct. My shipping price is about to increase again. I sell about 70 items a month that average 8-10 bucks a piece. Between PayPal and E-Bay they are collecting about 15-17% of my selling price. That cuts into your margin a LOT! Of course any good businessman just passes the cost along to the consumer, so up goes the S&H, especially the H. I am hoping this reduces the amount of .99 crap that takes up bandwith.

  • Actually in many ways it is forcing sellers to lower their prices in stores and their BIN not prices. Ebay wants selling prices to go down and opening bids to go down. Why do you think they kept listing fees under for items undner 99 cents at 30 cents?

I don't see where this is going to force any seller to up any prices. None of the fee changes affect anything that is forced on seller. If you don't use these you don't have to pay for them.
