Collector's Edge Background?

If you ever search for PSA graded cards on eBay then you've without a doubt run into several Collector's Edge football cards usually dating from 2000. Does anyone know the history behind this brand or set? There always seems to be a plethora of them available in high grade yet no one bids even when they start at a buck. Usually the seller doesn't even put the brand name (Collector's Edge) in the title, in fear that people won't even view the listing if they see that name. I really dread seeing this cards for sale and it makes me wonder why so many were even graded in the first place. Was this a hot set at the time? Collector's Edge seems like such a cliche name for a sports card. Any info would be greatly appreciated because I've been searching through this crap for quite a while now.

Collector's Edge had graded rookies and other cards inserted in packs or as boxtoppers for several of its sets that year (most notably Edge Graded). They were not alone - other companies did the same thing, but Fleer and Donruss used Beckett and Upper Deck used SGC. For some of their rookie cards, I would estimate that most of the cards produced are graded.

The company went out of business after that year.

  • Collectors Edge was a brand that first started producing football cards in 1993 their entire initial sets were serialed numbered and the cards were plastic. They are know for the Excalibur set in 1995 or 96 which was a really interesting set. In 1999 or 2000 I believe they were bought by Playoff Inc and their products were merged into Playoffs products.
