Here is an excerpt from the ANR website about a new book on $3 gold from Bowers, with help from Doug Winter:
Also coming down the pike is another new book, The United States $3 Gold Pieces 1854-1889, mainly by me, but with great help from well-known specialist Doug Winter. While the title indicates it is about $3 gold coins, and indeed it is, I have endeavored to put in a great deal of other information about the era in question, numismatic activities, comments about grading and certification, and much more. I feel that if you order a copy you will enjoy it thoroughly, even if you don’t own a single $3 piece. Of course, it might be dangerous to read it, for you probably will develop a possession desire to own at least one of these coins!

BTW, something like this might make the series take off. Some would argue that it already has.
Edited to add: I love $3's!

$3's are a much thinner market than Morgans or Double Eagles. If a dozen people decided to collect AU/MS $3's, they could squeeze up prices, especially in the scarcer issues. (IMO). It would take quite a few more $20 and even more Morgan collectors to accomplsih the same.

I did not know that, but I would not be surprised. $3's are really popular.
Odd denomination, gold, legitimately scarce to rare (except 54, 74, and 78) in number, cool branch mint issues (D, O, and S), Civil War dates, attractive design, not too small, 120-150 years old, etc. make them a winner in my book. I am not sure they are the quite the deal that they were a year or two ago (they got a serious bump in Trends about a year and a half ago), but they still seem to be a good value relative to other popular series.
I am really looking forward to the book. We will see if it gets others interested in $3's...
Here's Doug Winter's article on $3's from his old website. He offers lots of ways to collect them without buying the whole series. He also has a standalone article on the 54-D $3 (the most expensive, but not rarest issue), which I will link later, when I get the chance.

Mrearlygold was right. There will be a great complete set of $3's in the next ANR sale--the same that was my favorite exhibit at the ANA.
Someday, I would like to buy a 54-D $3. Someday.
<< <i>I spoke to DW today. He expects the book to be out in a few weeks! I am very excited--I hope to get mine autographed by QDB and DW.

Might be another complete set offered this year in addition to this one Robert with an amazing 75 and 76 in it. Those are the only 2 "complete" sets I know of right now.
