Joe Perry in NFL All-Time Rushers Set?

Was this card added to the set recently?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Yep looks like it. So much for me being only one card shy of completion.

I've never even heard of Joe Perry. How the heck is he an all-time great?

Joe Perry was the All-Time Leading rusher before Jim Brown....He definitely deserved to be in the set from day one...I'm glad he was finally added...

Did anyone get a Poll on it?

Yeah, after reading his stats and bio I definitely agree that he deserved to be added. I was just surprised that no one was polled about it. Corey Dillion's SP rookie should definitely be added next. He's on the verge of eclipsing 10,000 yards and should play for a few years beyond that too.

  • How about this one - Think I saw last week in the all-time receivers list - Irving Fryar. Yeah he played
a long time - just not that well.

I think the WR set is much like the All-Time Rushers set. The Rushers set doubles as a 10,000 yard club set. Guy gets 10,000 and gets added to list. The WR set seems to also be the 800 receptions club. Every WR with 800 or more is on it. Argument could be made against OJ Anderson on the rushers set. But he has the totals, as do Fryar and Ellard, to warrant inclusion. I doubt they will ever sniff the HOF, but its not a HOF set....

That being said, look for these guys to be added next year....

    Jimmy Smith
    Isaac Bruce

    Maybe Keenan McCardell
    Maybe Rod Smith

He definitely deserves to be in. Most underrated rusher ever, IMHO.

That said, how did they add the card without polling the registrants? If anyone requests any card, do they just add it? The way the registry is run frustrates the heck out of me sometimes.

Dillon should get 10,000 next year. No one else is really knocking on the door.

    Hi Joe,
You're right, I think that there should always be a poll with these types of sets. I really think the popularity of the registry is overwheming the few folks that they have working on it. They just don't seem to have time to handle the details like a poll.

Then again, there shouldn't be a debate whether Joe Perry should be in the set. He was the best RB of his day. IMHO

If Joe Perry is in, then Steve Van Buren should be added ...

Stephen W. Van Buren. . .No. 1 draft pick, 1944. . .All-NFL six straight years. . .Provided Eagles a battering-ram punch. . . Won NFL rushing title four times. . .1944 punt return, 1945 kickoff return champ. . . Scored only TD in 7-0 title win, 1948 . . . Rushed for then-record 196 yards in 1949 finale. . .Career mark: 5860 yards rushing, 464 points scored. . .Surpassed 1,000 yards in rushing twice. . .Born December 28, 1920, in La Ceiba, Honduras.

Steve Van Buren answered to a lot of names during his eight-year career in the National Football League, "Wham Bam,” "Supersonic Steve," "Blockbuster," and several more. Translated, they all meant he was an exceptional football player.

To be sure, Steve's pro career was distinctive. He surpassed 1,000 yards rushing twice, won four NFL rushing titles and a rare “triple crown” in 1945 when he led in rushing, scoring, and kickoff returns. He was a first-team All-NFL selection each of his first six seasons. Van Buren lined up as a halfback but played more like a fullback as the battering ram of a powerful Eagles squad that dominated the NFL in the late 1940s.

Philadelphia had never finished above fourth place until Steve came on the scene in 1944. That year they finished second, were runners-up two more years, won three straight divisional titles, and the NFL title in 1948 and 1949.

Van Buren provided the offensive punch in both championship victories. In 1949 title game against the Los Angeles Rams, Steve carried 31 times for a record 196 yards as the Eagles won 14-0. A year earlier, Van Buren rushed for 98 yards and scored the game's only touchdown in the Eagles 7-0 title win over the Chicago Cardinals.

Born in Honduras, Van Buren was orphaned when he was very young and sent to New Orleans to live with his grandparents. He failed to make the high school football team as a 125-pound high school sophomore, but as a senior he played well enough to win a scholarship to LSU. In his senior season, Van Buren rushed for 832 yards. Encouraged by LSU coach Bernie Moore, the Eagles selected him as their top pick in the draft. It was a break for Van Buren and, for the Eagles, possibly their most fortunate ever.
  • I didn't receive any poll email either. I wonder who requested Perry as an addition? Anyway, the good news for me is that we discussed this once before on another thread. Thinking that Perry would eventually be added, I bought his RC card 6 months ago. Time to update.

I was going to mention Van Buren image. I agree he should be added. My complaint is about the process, not the result.

Van Buren should be there also. Someone should send a request in for him to be added...He was also the dominant RB of his time.
