Fantastically good coin; really terrible photograph

Do you know how hard to is to find a 1721 French Colonies 9 Deniers better than this one?

Well, it is very, very hard.

Little trouble with the lighting though.

Try moving the light a bit away from the coin, then angling it more towards the coin. If you're not already, I'd suggest using at least two lights.

  • Thanks for the feedback -

I've actually been able to take some pictures which I would call marginal - a substantial improvement over my previous efforts which ranged from embarrassing to very, very poor.

I'm still not capturing the actual luster on coins like this -

    - and I note that, for reasons I can't explain, I seem to have taken a better picture of the catalog the coin is resting on than it is of the coin itself.

Plus I'm having a very tough time with darker copper coins, though I've heard others say that before in the chatroom.

Jeremy, am I better off with less light / slow shutter speed, or airport searchlights and a faster speed?

Airport searchlights are better. Faster shutter = sharper pics.

Knowing the coins you collect, we'll take your word for it.

Do you have a picture of these? I must be thinking of the wrong thing, I sure wouldn't want to bring a one million candle power searchlight in the house.

Searchlights warm things up a bit and you have to wear welding glasses and a flame retardent suit while shooting and the coin tends to start melting, but other than that there aren't any drawbacks.
