Question regarding NFL HOF induction class

My guess as to who will be inducted in the 2005 class:

1. Dan Marino
2. Steve Young
3. Art Monk
4. Richard Dent

I'm surprised that Monk isn't already in - he was the most dominating receiver of the 80's (besides Rice) and set many records that were eventually broken by Rice or Harrison.

What does everyone else think about the 2005 induction class and my comment about Monk?

Regards,

I agree with those four, plus LC Greenwood.

I'd like to see those four plus Harry Carson. LT grabbed all the headlines, but Carson was a great player too.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Don't underestimate the sentiment toward Derrick Thomas. Not sure if he legitimately gets in first time around,
but an overall great individual. No doubt was the LT of his time on no better than an average team. Not sure
Dent or Carson get in first time.
  • Marino, Young, Monk and Thomas.
Dent and Thomas belong but will not make it in this class.
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

I think Irvin and Monk BOTH get in this year..

I also don't think Carson will. Not after he sent a letter to the HOF asking not to be considered and that he doesnt want to be in the Hall if he isnt already there...

Thomas will get in eventually, same with Dent but probably not this year. Greenwood I'm not so sure about, good player on a great defense. Was he a difference maker??

I'd look for a darkhorse this year again. The last few elections have brought at least one surprise every year. I'd say Humphrey,Wehrli or Kuechenberg get in out of no where.

So my guess is a 5 player class...

I didn't hear about the Harry Carson letter. Say it aint so. He's one of my all-time favorite G-Men.

Carson is definitely HOF material...Should have been in years ago. I mean 9 Pro Bowls isnt enough? He was a difference maker before LT ever got there...

    Anyway, heres the story:

Harry to Hall: Keep me out

    By GARY MYERS
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Former Giants linebacker Harry Carson has taken unprecedented action to avoid getting snubbed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters ever again. He sent a letter this week to officials at the Hall requesting that his name be removed from future consideration.
"It's a political process and I'm not a very political person and I don't want to be involved in the process," Carson said yesterday. "After 10 years, you sort of get the message that people feel very strongly about whether I belong or not. Those people who don't want me there - what is going to change their minds? Nothing is going to change this year to five years from now."

Carson, who retired after the '88 season with nine Pro Bowls and one Super Bowl in 13 seasons, became eligible for the Hall of Fame after the '93 season and is 0-for-11 with Hall voters. He made it to the final 15 the last five years, including in January, when he said afterward he would "most likely" asked not to be considered again.

He mailed the letter Tuesday to John Bankert, the executive director of the Hall of Fame, and Joe Horrigan, the Hall's VP of communications. Neither had received it as of yesterday. Carson included the names of the 39 voters at the top of the letter. He also E-mailed it to 10-12 former Giants teammates.

Horrigan said no player has ever asked the Hall not to be considered. Asked if Carson would be taken off the ballot, Horrigan said, "I don't know how to answer that. It's never happened before. We have no provision to make someone ineligible. I can't imagine that we would take any formal action at all."

What would Carson do if he were elected? "I don't plan to be part of that process," Carson said. "I divorced myself from the whole thing. It's a moot point."

    Carson's letter read:

"With all due respect to the Institution which is the Pro Football Hall of Fame, its elected members, officers and committee members, I respectfully and humbly request that my name be removed from consideration as a finalist for the 2005 Hall of Fame voting as well as all future nominations. Furthermore, it is my desire that all future fan nominations with my name attached be taken out of consideration as well."

What a shame. I hadn't heard about the letter and I really thought this would be the year for Carson. Bummer. I do agree with him though - as far as the voting being political. How else would you explain a completely undeserving player like Lynn Swann getting in? He made some acrobatic catches in the Super Bowl. Whoopdie doo. Check out his career stats:

    http://www.profootball-reference.com/players/SwanLy00.htm

He never surpassed 880 yards receiving in any season and he finished with 5,462 yards.

Personally, I don't think Irvin should get in before Monk.
  • JasP24JasP24 Posts: 4,645 ✭✭✭
Me either Southsider...I think the voters will see it the same way and put BOTH of them in...They are both deserving. Both were dominant players of their era.

Only thing hurting Monk is his lack of Pro Bowls and/or All-Pro selections...But he retired as the All-Time Reception leader...How is he NOT already in???

I completely agree on the Monk issue. He's like Adrian Dantley in basketball, he was so good I just assumed he was already in, but amazingly they've slipped through the cracks.

  • Although his on field performance and Super Bowls warrant it - I don't think Irvin goes in this year. Too much
off the field baggage for him to go in first try.

Very good point. Remember when Derrick Thomas sacked Dave Krieg 7 times? Talk about dominating. He was probably one of the best outside LB's of all time.

Derrick Thomas was a monster, IMO he deserves to be in:

He holds the NFL record for most sacks in one game with 7 and also had a 6 sack game in his career.
Recorded 20 sacks for the season in 1990.
He is 10th all-time in sacks with 126.5, despite only playing 11 seasons. That's an average of 11.5 sacks a season!
He went to the Pro Bowl 9 consecutive seasons from 1989-1997.

What makes this even more impressive to me is that he did this on a team famous for the Riggo drill...

Young and Marino are locks of course. I agree with Jason that one "grunt" type will get the nod, and IMHO Kuechenberg has the momentum this year. I also think one of the vets commitee guys will make it, and Friedman was a legitimate superstar in his day. I think Thomas also makes it this year. So, my predictions are:

    Benny Friedman

    Bob Kuechenberg

    Dan Marino

    Derrick Thomas

    Steve Young

    Joe
No such details will spoil my plans...
  • 1. Dan Marino
    2. Steve Young
    3. George Young
    4. Fritz Pollard
    5. Bob Kuechenberg or Derrick Thomas
