I learned something very important today...

<< <i>In my best Stan from Sough Park voice >>

I learned a very important lesson today, I would post this on the darkside board, but you people here are much more cruel! I have a 2002 Canada proof set, I needed to upgrade my 2002 Canada dollar. Well, the dollar in the set has a very small smudge on it. I think, proof coin, small smudge, acetone!

Lesson: NEVER use acetone on a CANADA proof coin! The have something on the surface of the coin, and it DOES NOT like acetone!

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

They must do something different in the minting process. Kinda looks like some of their hologram coins.
    I like it.

From what I understand there is a very thin coat of a wax type substance on the coin.

No problem, just get the dremel out and put them on ebay as matte finish proofs with orange peel fields.
  • Obviously acetone will dissolve it so I say soak it for a few days, then rinse in a fresh bath of acetone a couple of times.

I believe so too. Just keep refreshing your acetone and I'll bet your coin cleans up just great!

How long have they been doing this ?

I have a 71 and 72 that really came out with cool colors when they were rinsed with acetone. Like you I was just trying to get some of the felt from the original box off the coin.

  • If that were a baseball card it would be a refractor.
Put it up on as ebay as a Canadian proof refractor.

I thought they only put a coating on the hologram coins. I wonder what the "wax" is supposed to do?
