Buying (or overpaying depending on who is talking) everyone around does not make a winner. The two worst moves they have made was wasting money on Pedro "they better not disrespect me" Martinez and not keeping Al Leiter. Leiter was a core guy that makes a team better just by being there, even when he isn't on the field. It looks like the Marlins realize that. Omar Minaya did a great job with little money in Montreal, but it looks like he may end up doing a terrible job with a lot of money on the Mets. Cheers to your 14th division title in 2006 Atlanta.

We finally get a chance to get our hands on an up and coming YOUNG very good ball player and we still have to hear from the peanut gallery
the Mets had exercised the buyout clause in the contract with their existing cable carrier and announced plans to launch their own sports network in 2006.
The Mets needed some hot commodities to leverage upcoming negotiations with cable systems and to lure viewers. Not just for 2006 -- but for 2005, to build marketing steam after a three-year slide of 272 losses.
I'd say they are spending $$ to make $$.......on paper they appear to be the real deal
I'd guess they will sell-out a lot of games this year and be in the hunt come October.
..........all they need now is a gay looking "Brawny" wannabe rock star

If you have a bigotry problem, I suggest you move to a neo nazi website. Otherwise, keep your bigoted remarks to yourself.
<< <i>For years all us Mets fans heard was about how we pay bick bucks for players PAST their primes.

Kobe. I really don't think you read what I said. I said nothing about the Beltran move. What I said is that they over paid for Pedro Martinez, when they should instead have kept Al Leiter. Martinez, is NOT in his prime. The contract he got from the Mets was more in the level of someone in his prime, or nearing his prime. What I'm saying is that the Mets are always going out throwing money at free agents when it has never worked for them. The reason they won in 1986, other than the Red Sox choking was because they built a great team from draft picks and trades. Daryl Strawberry Dwight Gooden, Gary Carter and Keith hernandez were not "bought" They were drafted and traded for. If the Mets had the scouting that the Twins appear to have, the Mets would be winners every year because, unlike the Twins, they would be able to keep their players when they come up for free agency. What they do now is try to be like the Yankees, buying up every free agent that comes along. They can't compete with the Yankees in that manner, because the Yankees have more baseball income nand they have 4 Chanpionships in the past 9 years. I would love to see the Mets have a great team and dethrone the Braves. It would be good for baseball, but the way they are doing it, it isn't going to work. The keeping up with the Jones' mentality usually doesn't.
I think the Mets have been building their farm system of late with guys like Wright and Reyes although Jose needs to stay healthy this year
They also just signed their 1st rd pick Phil Humber who had a great career at Rice Uni.
<< <i>Iseeyou, my fault on that one.

Hopefully the Mets can pull something together.
No harm done Kobe, no need to apologize. To understand the Mets Failures, a great way is to look at the Yankees failures, then success, and now current failures (I will elaborate on the current "failures in a bit) In the 1980s, the Yankees were trying to get all the big names, Dave Winfield and Ricky Henderson are two of them, and would get guys who had one great season like Andy Hawkins. What they did to do this was trade away their young talent such as Doug Drabek, and Fred McGriff to name a couple. This got them the power hitters, but their pitching was week. They were the winningest team of the 1980s, but only had the 1981 AL pennant to show for it. Then what happened in the early 1990s was that Mr. Steinbrenner was suspended and the management stopped going for the big names and tried to build the team. The only problem was they had to start over because Mr Steinbrenner traded away most of the young talent. This left a void leading the team to 90+ losses 2 straight years. What happened then was Gene Michael Bob Watson and some other great scouts drafted the right guys like Derek Jeter, Andy Pettite and a few other and decided to keep them, while making shrewd trades and signings like Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill, and the Free agent signing of Wade Boggs. That's why they started building the championships. Mr Steinbrenner did not have a chance to unload the good players. At the time of their first world series championship, he was beginning the old trend again by signing Kenny Rogers. Management did not want to, but the boss did, so they did. As time as gone on, things have steadily come back full circle to the 1980s moves. That's why the Yankees have not won since 2000. What I mean by current failures is that Mr Steinbrenner expects a championship every single year with the new players he brings in, so to not get that championship is pure failure. his Randy Johnson trade is one of the biggest pitcher trade blunders I have ever seen. You trade a 28 year old pitcher that may have another 10 to 15 years left for a 41 year old that even with a liberal estimate has no more than 5 years left. Eventually all this money spending will lead the Yankees to losing money once the public feels the ticket prices are too high. That could lead to them not being able to afford free agents. They no longer have a great farm system, so they could be headed to some bad seasons around the end of this decade.
