Bid cancellation

Fairly new to this so I was surprised to see this. A bidder who I have been up against before, backed out on his bid and left me the high bidder. In a way that is good but he caused me to "bid up" and then he backed down to a lower bid. Here is the strange part. His reason was the he bid the "wrong" amount. It is a PSA 10 card of a modern player. He bought a similar card for $130 last week but his bid of $96 this week was "wrong". He has a set registered so I was surprised to see this. I don't think he frequents the board but I would love to hear his reasoning. What should I do? I like the card, I need the card but I don't like the idea of being "forced" to be the high bidder. Thanks in advance

the previous auction he mentioned: Link2

you "don't like the idea of being forced to be the high bidder"???

ummm... maybe I am missing something here, but I will go ahead and state the obvious:

Maybe you should not have bid on the auction in the first place if you did not want to be the high bidder

Also, the auction that you are currently the high bidder on... the seller only have 28 feedback, and he misspelled the players name in auction title, so you might get lucky and get the card for a lot cheaper than your "friend" paid for his. Plus, like I said... why did you bid $75 in the first place if you did not want to be the high bidder???
  • Jon B, You're right about one thing. You bid because you want to win an item. That is why I am not sure why he retracted his bid. I am not retracting my bid. I want the card, I just want to "feel" things out as the auction gets closer to the end. I finished second to him the first time around. I'm sure that you have experienced what I have felt before when you see a card you want but are not sure how high you want to go. I will probably go higher on this card but I prefer not to say how much higher. There are not a lot of people who are interested in this card to begin with. Thanks for your input. Thanks for the links as well. I read the forums every day but never really had much of a chance to post.

  • try sniping in the future instead of "feeling things out" first. Decide on a reasonable price you want to pay, place your snipe, and don't think about it again until the auction is over. This will save the auction from being bid up (basically what you did to your "friend" in the first auction) or shilled, and it will also save you from over-paying for a card in the last seconds of an auction because you get too attached to it and all of a sudden you feel like "you just have to have it"

I can't say that I would like it either. It looks to me like the other bidder was a little miffed that you ran him up on the previous one. So he decided to put in a high bid, saw he was high bidder at $76.00, therefore knowing your bid was $75.00. He then cancelled his high bid, and bid exactly what you did knowing that equal bids go to whomever bid first. Looks like a little gamesmanship to me.

Next time just put in one max bid of what your willing to pay. It still may cost the other buyer the same price, but it doesn't look as bad as putting in several bids that gives the "appearance" of running him up.

One big bid, let the best man win.....

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
  • Perhaps the other bidder felt you had "bid up" the previous auction to a higher price to force him to pay
$30 (as I recall) higher and he came back, pushed it high and baled. Just guessing.

Bidding up happens frequently especially with bidders who frequently bid for the same
items against each other day after day for certain sets, players, etc. Right or wrong you still have to
honor your high bid even if the other guy retracts his. Every bidder has "patterns" that they follow and
a "bidding personality". If you bid against the same person enough you will know what they will do and
ultimately what you will need to do to win the auction.

Maybe you'll get lucky on this one but everyone wins auctions that they KNOW they overpaid for but
your only other choice is not bid a penny higher than you feel the card is worth to YOU, and HOPE it
will be good enough. Alot of the time it won't be.

Hope this helps and doesn't come across harsh - It's not meant to.
  • Thanks a lot guys. I never really thought of it the way you are seeing it. It makes sense to me now that maybe he was a little pissed at putting such a high ceiling bid on the first one. I couldn't believe that I couldn't get the top bid in the first auction. Eventually, I "chickened out" but I didn't mean to make him mad. I figured he just wanted it more than I did. I know that I have overpaid on some items and have had that buyer's remorse but I have also had buyer's remorse when I lose out by just a little bit more than what I wanted to pay. That is what makes this hobby and Ebay so enjoyable. It gives everyone a chance to find that one special card(and to pay that special price).

Report him to ebay. It is clear that he retracted and reentered his bid in order to rig the bid to your maximum. That is a violation of ebay rules.

  • Paul, check out Justsnipe. It has a nice easy-to-use interface, and it's cheap. For light bidders such as myself, you get five free snipes per week, or for only $5 a month you can have unlimited snipes.
  • maybe the other guy was hoping the card actually said "Kahlil Greene" as if an uncorrected error.

Yeah I kind of "love it" when mistakes are made...like in the 1967 set PSA Set Registry still insists its Rene "Lachermann"

  • Huh...didn't think you could retract all bids on an item and then be eligible to bid again on that auction.
Like stepping out of bounds running down thru the players then jumping back on the field in the end zone'

  • Just retract your bid and bid again. Then he won't have you pegged to any amount at all!
