Buying right vs have to buy it

8 years ago I bought a pop 1 trade dollar for my set. In the intervening time, another coin was upgraded and crossed and I bought it as part of the Share Collection. Today I finally sold the underpop coin.
I broke even after 8 years ... in an up market. At the time I bought it, I knew I was overpaying but it was a pop 1 and a key date to boot. That, of course, didn't last. I have mixed feelings - I guess it's ok to be out even after all that time after finding a coin I liked better. Yet, at the same time, I regret not putting that money to better use over the years. Soooo many coins have doubled or gone up a grade and redoubled!
Oh, well - lesson learned. If you HAVE to have it, it's gonna cost you!

My stategy has its draw backs too, but I look for different coins that I think are quality coins (not top pop stuff) and attempt to contemplate how often I will see the coin in the condition currently offered (or higher) at a fair price in the future. While I have made some mistakes, the bigger mistakes have been the coins that I should have bought and didn't.

Absolutely true!
then what has really happened is that the time value of the undergrade transferred to the top pop Share coin.
Hmmm - hadn't really looked at it that way. Interesting!
