Here's some PRO honesty you don't see everyday

trimmed Mantle

From the description:

You are bidding on a 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle (#135). This card has been graded 8.0 (NM-MT) by PRO, and its serial number is 30482994. Please note that I submitted this card to PSA to be graded, and it was returned with the grade "EVID TRIM."

Wonder how long until the buyer has it for sale without the same honesty.

What a true testament to the reliability of PRO grading company.

The really unfortunate part of this story is how much the seller of these cards spent on them. Check the links in his feedback. Over $3000 spent on these cards.

The other cards he bought were graded by CSA - that is a "franchise-like" purchase from Alan Hager in the 90's - they were originally in Ohio, if memory serves. Hager, of ASA fame, sold the rights to the holder and the appropriate equipment and holders along with training etc., for a flat fee. For those who may not know, he at one time, held the exclusive copywrite to the 10 pt. grading system and orginated the arrowhead cornered holders.

Now I don't know about CSA. The prices realized for these cards is very low commensurate with the grade.
The Koufax RC looks pretty nice IMO - probably trimmed?

    From the Pro website:

<< <i>Our grading is of the highest standards. Our senior graders are veteran collectors who understand that all cards were not produced in the same manner and grading must take into consideration special circumstances that may surround a specific card. No 1952 Topps is going to look like a 1999 Topps Finest, and grading companies must understand the difference. A grading company should know papers, ink, photography, and printing techniques, as well as knowing how to measure centering, check corners and look for surface wear. Grading requires mature judgment. That is why all PRO graded cards are graded by two experts, and a copy of the grading slip is returned with each card PRO grades. >>

The PRO web site should add: "Not all collectors trim their cards with the same degree of skill. Grading companies should recognize the difference between a bad razor job and a superlative one. We believe our grades reward those who take the time and care to do it right."
