It looks to be an XF coin but the obverse seems to be sporting some type of rim damage.

A coins value is based on it's condition, with circulated coins worth less than uncirculated "mint state" coins.

    Coins are graded on a scale from 1-70 - yours looks about a VF-30 worth between $35 - $60

Leave it alone - a cleaned coin loses value faster than Enron stock image

  • The coin appears to have nice surfaces but the rim damage will turn-off many collectors. Without the rim damage this is a $50 to $60 coin but because of the rim damage $25 is a fair price.

If you are intend on selling the coin, I would try the Buy Sell Trade forum and if that fails eBay is an alternative. I think you would have a difficult time selling it to a dealer for much more than $10 and the large majority of dealers would not make an offer on the coin.

I don't see the rim damage as being severe, and listing the coin on Ebay would most likely get you the $65 or more for the coin. I don't know about bigger shows, etc., but I look at a lot of bust halves on Ebay and smaller local shows and can attest to the fact that the days of getting these uncleaned with decent detail, dings or not, for $25.00 is about over.

How much for the half? Can you provide a scan of the edge?

VF35 details, minor rim bumps. The coin appears to be very original. The dentils on the rim that do not show in most areas are mostly from worn dies. The "missing" H on the edge is probably underneath the R, it sounds like a spacing error on the opposing edge lettering dies that caused OR and HALF to be overlapped. These are fairly common, it normally will not add a premium, but you should mention the edge error when you sell it. A picture of the edge error would help on ebay. It should get $55-$65, from ebay or a dealer. Prices have gone up for common circulated bust halves, I have been getting $60 for coins with less detail than yours from local dealers.

That's about what I would ask if I were selling the coin, if not more... it looks to be a strong VF35, IMO, unless there's some luster left... great original grey patina, if it's as thick in person as it looks in the pictures, I'd probally ask a little more than $80...

$50-$80 is the right range. Sell on ebay if you decide to part with it.
