I love Barber Dimes and Halves, but haven't been as enthusiastic about the quarters since I'm not sure if I will ever be able to afford the 1901-S. This is a coin that should be purchased with authntication from a trusted source Still, I am amazed to see what gets posted on eBay.
Once I saw an Accugrade-slabbed 1901-S quarter designated the "weak S variety" sell on eBay for $900 +. No one else has mentioned that variety, which several collectors said looked like the remaining glue in the mintmark area after an attached S fell off. Currently, there aren't any 1901-S quarter auctions quite as outrageous as that one:
Auction #1, from a seller I learned to avoid (the hard way), who is clearly dreaming with his starting price.
Auction #2, looks like a cast counterfeit, but has gathered a few bids from naive or cheapskate optimists already.
Auction #3 Legit, but only Fair condition at the gross domestic product of ten people working in Burkina Faso.
Auction #4 Again legit, but only AG and priced at 2 to 3 times the value of my trusty 1987 Volvo station wagon.

Yes, but in the next year or two, there is a pretty good chance you will have to put $1000-2500 in your Volvo to keep all systems running. The coin requires no repairs, no maintenance, and no gas.

Edited to add: #4 looks like the best deal of the group.
