Help on making an inventory spreadsheet

I am sure I saw a post on this awhile back but can't find it. I want to start a list so I have info on my coins I have and get later. Could anyone help me on what info should go into my spreadsheet.

I have an Access database with the following information:

    Date
    Mintmark
Design Type (i.e. Seated, Eisenhower, etc).
    Denomination (dime, half-dollar, etc)
    Location (For finding later!)
    Obtained (Who/where I bought it)
    Grade
    Date of Purchase
    Amount Paid
CDN Bid (for tracking current wholesale value)
Trends (for tracking current retail value)
Attribution (anything from VAM, Overton, or Breen numbers)
    Comments (including TPG serial numbers)

Plus a couple of utilitarian columns:
Inventory (Put an X when I find it during one inventory....remove the x the next time)
Sell? (Ability to mark the coins I'm ready to sell/trade)

Should be the basics, but others will have other ideas as well.

  • Thanks Tom looks like I am going to have to widen my spreadsheet some. Alot of info I would need and didn't think of.

I also use an Access database and it's probably very very close to what TommyType has. It has almost the exact same info in it. Made it myself.

If you have the capability to create a database rather than a spreadsheet it is preferable, because it is searchable and you can create custom reports with just the columns you want.

Agree that a data base works better started with a spread sheet gave it up. Not able to sort the info. I use Works Suite cheap program very easy for the beginner to use.
    Mime runs like this.
    Year / Mint / Grading /Description /Remarks/Bought From / Cost/ Value/ Date/ Sold To/ Amount/ Date Sold
By putting the year first it made it easy sort from the earliest date to present date easy.

Thanks for the idea everyone for the database. I have the progarm on my computer and never used it.
Thanks for all the ideas for columns too TommyType!!
  • Yes thanks for the ideas. I started with a spreadsheet have about 116 lincolns listed so far I tried to use my data base program but is missing files or something so will work with a spreadsheet to get a feal for what I like. Then get a coin program to work with later. I better get busy I have 116 coins to grade should be good practice.
