My Visit To The Carson City Mint

Over the holidays, I went on vacation to Carson City to see some family friends. While in town, I couldn't pass up a visit to the old mint, the seventh in my pilgrimage to all the U.S. mints. I now only need to get to West Point to have visited them all. image At this point, it's usually pretty easy to figure out which building is the mint - the early ones seem to have followed a very similar architectural style. Unfortunately, we were running short on time, so I couldn't visit the museum inside on Nevada, but I did visit a coin shop directly across the street. Since there were no cheap CC's (Who am I kidding?), I had to settle for a proof Kennedy for my Registry Set, but my dad (WaterSport) did get two GSA CCs with the NGC band - an 1882-CC and 1884-CC. What made this even cooler was the fact that he bought them maybe 50 feet away from where they were made over 100 years ago. Feel free to try to guess the grade, or, if you can, VAM them. I'll reveal the grades in a while.

  • 82 looks to be a 64- can't see any special Vam- pic to small. The 84 looks to be a solid 63/64, and again can't see the Vam due to pics.

I just bought the encyc of morgies and peace $$ by Van Allen - Mallis. so i'm learning.

    those look sharp.

Excellent thread & pics by everyone! I didn't know it snowed in Carson City. I assume it's up north?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • It's high up enough to get snow.

It's a shame that there wasn't more stuff at the Carson City mint (sort of like the
Dahlonega mint) but the display of CC mint coins was nice.

It's near the angle in Nevada, and next to Reno and Lake Tahoe. It snowed the entire week I was there, probably 1-1.5 feet total. I went up to Lake Tahoe too - the snow was up to my knees. In fact, it was snowing when our plane took off.

I'd say MS-64 on both and both are nice looking coins.

I've only made it to Philadelphia so far (I've been to West Point but didn't get to visit the Mint). Thanks for sharing the coins and the picture of the old SF Mint.

The pic is of the Carson City mint, although it does look rather similar to the San Francisco one. Everyone's been close on the grades so far - NGC called both coins MS-63. I think the 1882-CC may be a shot 64, although the 1884-CC has a large number of smallish marks that don't show up too well in the picture as well as somewhat weak luster, and is probably accurately graded.

I think it's pretty cool also ...to think of the wagon trains carrying them to the east coast...then being sold by the us gov.
a hundred years later to all points in the USA ...and these coins finally making it back home to where they were born...only once again to be adopted.

It kind of makes me cry for the little fellas.

    Solid 64s

Thanks for the story and pictures

At least 65s on both coins.
