1981 Topps #600 Bench PSA 9 -- opening bid $200??

4_Sharp_Corners has an opening bid of about $200 for a 1981 Topps #600 Johnny Bench PSA 9. I know as well as anybody that this is a very rare card in mint condition, the hardest Bench regular card to get in PSA 9 other than 1971 #250. But 4SC is shooting for the moon here, I believe. They must be dreaming of the days when there were less than 10 examples and they sold for $350. The population of PSA 9's is now up to 15.

It just so happens *cough* that I, too, have one of those PSA 9's up for sale at the same time, ending a couple days later. My opening bid is about a dollar. I don't expect mine will sell for anywhere near what 4SC is asking, but I doubt theirs will sell until it's gone bidless a couple times and they set a more reasonable opening price.

Here's a link to both auctions.

  • JR,

The 4SC Bench looks a bit better centered than yours - but definitely not $200 worth of better centering, considering that THIS IS A CARD FROM THE 1980S! I put in a nice bid on yours. I can guarantee you that yours will sell for a nice price! image I can also tell you that Roger will still make a 5000% profit ± when he does sell, whether it's this week, next week, or when he lists it for the 10th time in a few months! It doesn't hurt to go "fishing" every once in a while. Sometimes you catch a big one!

    Good for you.

Thanks for reminding me ... I never received my xmas card, even though I spent $37,682 last year on $122 worth of cards! image

Christmas card list, phooey. For the amount I have spent with them, I want TWO stockings ... filled with Anna Kournikova's legs.

I know 4SC's Bench is centered slightly better. I hope somebody bites at $200. Actually, I hope two people bite at that price level. Then the losing bidder will turn to mine. But they won't. The opener is just too high. I would love to be out to lunch on this one.

I hope I'm wrong for your sake jrdolan, but the final bid should fall somewhere around $100 or so - and 4SC will end up relisting theirs next week at a $99.95 opening bid.

Dammit, no Christmas card for me either - probably because I am not one of the fools who fall for this kind of bait.

  • 4 sharps had an 85 donruss psa 10 puckett rookie listed for an opening bid of 125.00 and couple weeks ago. I passed up on it until friday when they relisted it with a buy it now of 75.00.

Yeah, you gotta play the game with 4SC. Sometimes they win because they list a tough card you gotta have for the set and don't want to lose it.. More often than not, it's a waiting game, especially when there is limited interest in the card.

Very true. If you know your competition - hopefully it's not MOSH?!
  • Too much 80's unopened still around to assume this card will always be tough to find. $ 200 for that card? when I could be buying a 60's top tier hall of famer card for that price. I think not.

Less than a year ago this was a tough card and was selling for $300+. There's an old thread or two about it. I guess 4SC is being a little cautious about underselling older stuff. Weren't they the ones who sold a 1969 Brock 8 at a $50 BIN?

This is still a tough card to find in truly "mint" condition. Notice that both cards have the black smudges around his name and hat logo. Those of us sending in '81's a few years ago were hesitant to send in these type of cards with fear of PD qualifier or getting a 7. Once it was learned that PSA overlooks this flaw, the POP started to jump on these cards.

    Playball,
You bring up an interesting point. At what point does a smudge become a print defect? The 78 Trammell/Molitor rookie card is fanous for the red and black smudges, yet they don't seem to impact the grade.

Apparently PSA has a notation somewhere for graders that there's no such thing as a completely smudge-less '81 Bench. If one were to surface and it had mint corners and good centering as well, it would be the only PSA 10 in existence. I guess if even minimal smudging disqualified it from 9, there would be no 9's at all. How they decide how much smudging is acceptable, I have no clue.
