1881CC Question

I have a question concerning 1881CC Morgan Dollar. In Numismatic News, it lists 2 versions. One - reverse of 1878, Second - reverse of 1879. Does this mean there are two different designs on reverse?
And can anyone recommend a good source of information on Morgans/Peace Dollars, I am hoping 2005 will be the year to build this collection. Thanks fir your info.

There are a few differences on the reverse between the 1878 and the 1879 issues. Check out this website, it will help explain-- Morgan reverses

    It's the 1880-CC, not the 1881-CC
    When in doubt, don't.

Tom, I would strongly suggest buying The Comprehensive Catalog of Morgan and Peace Dollars by Van Allen and Mallis (commonly referred to as the VAM book). There is a wealth of information in this telephone sized book. There are several sellers on eBay selling these in the $40 range.

  • Do what K6AZ says---You will save (or make) a lot of money and enjoy collecting much more. The premium for the reverse

of '78 is not as justified as people believe because there are so many variations to the 80-CC IMHO. It's getting harder to

find a plain reverse these days. BTW- before you ask, the '78 has a straight top arrow feather and a concave eagle's

breast and it's also called the "2nd reverse". Have fun!!image
