Great flea mkt finds! Need help with VAM 3(or 4) and VAM 5, 1882 O.

I bought these two coins today; flea market finds. I am not sure if they are MS weak strikes or AU. The ears are both so flat I am leaning towards mint state, weak strike as New Orleans often produced. I am comfortable they both are uncirculated, mint state is another question.

They are both O/S mint marks, they match the photos in the VAM book and the Top 100. When I look at my Fall 2004 price list, I see there are V3ed and V5ed varieties. I assume in the years since my 3rd edition VAM book was published there have been different states discovered. Same for VAM 4.

The only difference I see on both of these coins from the VAM book description is that I see no dots from a rusted die.

Can anyone point me towards a more current written definition of the various sub VAMs for the 1882 O? I am having a devil's own time find a copy of 4th edition I guess I will get it in Ft Lauderdale next week.

Any help on the ID and opinions on grade are appreciated. I feel real fortunate to find these two coins at a flea market for very low money. I very good day of VAMing.

First coin looks like a VAM 3(O/S flush) "An earlier die state shows a thin diagonal line (formally VAM 6)"

Second coin looks just like the VAM 5 picture(O/S Broken) "An earlier die state shows a triangular dot at the left side of loop opening and as a fine line in the middle."

I have the book right here if you need more info.

    Great day VAMing!!image

On the VAM 3, there is a triangular shape on the bottom right of the mint mark opening. It looks like the photo in my 3rd edition VAM. Photo attached.

On the VAM 5 I see a dot and line, left of loop of the MM. Photo attached.

    Thanks for the assist.

    Russ nope, I found two.

Hard to believe but in 1992 I found an 1878 VAM 44 at a flea market.

I would consider submitting them. From the picture, its a tough call.

Nice finds. I think both are AU...cherrying a BU 1882-O/S would be a super score though.

I am leaning towards AU. Yep cherry picking these guys in MS would be incredible. I've looked at a lot of Morgans and I just can not make the call. I may take them down to FUN next weekend and get some opinions. Even in AU they were a blast to find.
