Morgan CC Info/question

OK, file this under “If it seems too good to be true it probably is.” I was out on ebay this morning looking for Morgan CC’s in GSA holders. When I see this auction for an
1883-CC, with less then 5 minutes to go and current bid at $178.00. As I look at the auction, I see the seller has 100% feedback, but less then 100 sells/buys and most of his current sales are Morgans. OK, so far so good. The picture that he has in the auction is in fact a GSA holder and a Morgan albiet very poor. OK. One of the first things that catches my eye is that at the bottom of the holder it just has “Silver Dollar” and not “Uncirculated Silver Dollar”. Then I read the description of the auction. “Here we have a really nice 1892 Carson City mint GSA morgan dollar. The reverse of this coin is astonishing!” He has a return policy, so it could be worse. So with time running out and all fingers and toes crossed I bid on the Morgan and win. Worse case (IMHO) I’m out the $10 - $15 for shipping both ways.

Any thoughts?

Seller seems a bit scatterbrained but I think you're OK.
    When in doubt, don't.

  • I emailed him about that after the fact. I'm interested to see what he says. Also, I have not found any other place that has 92-CC in GSA holders. image

The coin he has in the picture is an 83cc. Let us know what he says when he returns your email. Still could be a nice catch if the toning is nice and it is PL, reverse definately looks pl!

    And image to the forum!!

Most definetly an 83cc. the 92cc only has a population of one.

Is the seller saying the 92cc is in a gsa holder? If so you are close to being able to retire. Nice 83cc gsa!!

  • I emailed the seller and asked that very question, unfortunately, right after the auction ended. My first fear was that it was a coin that didn’t belong in there. Then after thinking about it, I thought, if they are foolish enough to put a 92-CC UNC in a GSA holder thinking it was not as valuable as the 83-CC, their lose (and that I could be so lucky). But, then he answered the email and re-stated that it was in fact an 83-CC and that he had made a mistake that carried over from a previous posted auction and just forgot to change the date.

-- Sort of a follow up question. There were a couple of people that said it was definitely an 1883 in the picture. I’m just curious how you were able to tell that. I tried a couple of different things in Photoshop, but the results were to grainy to tell for certain. Or is it just a familiarity with Morgan’s? Just curious.

Thank you all for your input.

  • I was tracking the same auction and was ready to really go after the coin when I saw it on the bottom. I emailed the seller and asked him what was going on. His response was great. He just sold a raw 92cc and forgot to change it. Then I screwed my head back on and retracted the bid. And it still went for 170 and change. Go figure. His name was Cal. That ebay is a real trip!!!!!!!
